The Gulf of Mexico oil well has been spewing oil for five months and officials say that they can now declare the broken well is “dead”. Yahoo news reports that Thad Allen, the US pointman for the response to the disaster, confirmed the well was “dead” on Sunday. Allen, a retired Coast Guard Admiral, states that their operation to intersect and cement the well was a success.

Pressure tests on the cement cap were completed and their development was confirmed by the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. Allen notes that although further regulatory steps will be undertaken, Macondo 252 no longer poses a risk to the Gulf of Mexico.

This disastrous spill which started on April 20 released more than 4 million gallons of oil into gulf waters. It is the largest oil spill in U.S. history and has ruined many coastal businesses. The spill started when the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig which was commissioned by BP and operated by Transocean Energy exploded into a fireball, leaving 11 workers dead.
