Do you have questions about legal matters in Mexico? Ask Miguel Angel, an expert in immigration issues for foreigners. As a former Base Commander for the Nayarit State Tourist Police, Miguel is well known for helping tourists and residents in the Banderas Bay area.

Q: I have an FM3 that will expire in December 2010. I cannot go to Mexico until January 2011. Do I have to get a temporary Visa or what?
- Dan H.

A: DO NOT get a temporary visa (FMM) which is the tourist visa for 180 days because that would be considered double documentation and there is a fine for that.

The good news is that your FM3 is still good! You have 60 days grace to return to Mexico and another grace period of up to 30 days once in Mexico to submit your renewal. There is no fine.

Make sure the official at the border or airport stamps your FM3 with the date of entry when you arrive. If you have any problems call my cell. It is on 24/7. I have had clients phone me and put the border official on the line so I could talk on their behalf. Keep my phone number in your wallet and a cell phone handy. (Cell: 322-148-9788)
