On Sunday, November 7th the 8th Annual Puerto Vallarta half marathon and 5K competition will be run. The popular race has had more runners each year and a record number are expected at this year's race as well. The starting point is the same place as it has been since its inception; at the Sports Stadium across from the Sheraton. Growing each year and part of the Mexican circuit of marathons and half-marathons, this race will have the best runners from all of Mexico as well as the best from many other countries.

The half marathon will start promptly at 6:50 AM and 10 minutes later, the 5K runners will begin their race. The half marathon in recent years has been dominated in the "Open Division" by Kenyans, who are superb distance runners; however some of the best in Mexico have improved and have finished in the top three but have yet to win since the Kenyans came on the scene about four years ago.

The race is state of the art, with each competitor having a chip to correctly record their running time. Also each registered runner will receive a commemorative T shirt and medallion. For the first 200 registered runners there is also a boat trip the evening prior to the race that will include a carbohydrate filled dinner and a raffle for other prizes.

On the course there will be station each 2 kilometers that will give runners beverages for heath concerns. It is highly recommended by the organizers that one has a medical clearance to run the half-marathon, however it is not mandatory.

The cost to participate is $230 pesos and there will be prize money disbursed in all divisions, both men and women, by age, as well as in the Open Division.

The packages will be available for pick-up during the EXPO SPORT & HEALTH, located in the Municipal Sports Unit "Augustine Flowers Contreras" on Thursday, November 4th to Saturday November 6th from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There will not be any pick-ups the day of the race nor there any reimbursements.

The temperature at the start of the race has traditionally been around 21 degrees C with low humidity which sure makes running 21 kilometers a lot more bearable than Puerto Vallarta's summer temperatures.

The route will be flat and all roads will be closed to traffic beginning at the stadium, proceeding north up the main road Francisco Medina Ascensia, past Sam's Club which will be at the 4km mark, past the airport, then turning into the Military Base for a kilometer and then turning around and returning on the same route. The finish line will be at the stadium where the starting line was. For the 5k participants, the turn will be at the Holiday Inn and then back to the stadium. Every 2km there will be drinks offered, bathrooms and medical assistance.
