A former Marin resident who was reported missing in Mexico in August has been found murdered, his family said.

Lane Gilbert, a 1981 Sir Francis Drake High School graduate, went missing Aug. 27 after showing a house in Oaxaca state, where he had been living for 18 years, his family said in a statement. Gilbert, 46, had been working as a real estate agent in Mexico.

"The family just wants to move beyond the terrible events to just remember what a strong, inspiring person Lane was," said Jenny Jedeikin, a family friend and Greenbrae resident.

Authorities found Gilbert's body over the weekend on property he owned in San Bartolo Coyotepec, the statement said.

Police have arrested Andres Maya Martinez, a Mexican citizen, on suspicion of murder, according to the statement. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said it could not yet give official confirmation that the body found over the weekend was Gilbert's but expressed condolences to the family.

"We've been in touch with the family and are trying to provide assistance to them," an embassy spokesman said. "We've also been in touch with the Mexican authorities to track the case."

Jedeikin said authorities hadn't determined a motive in the crime, but the statement said Maya Martinez confessed to "brutally murdering" Gilbert with a machete.

Gilbert's mother, Jerie Gilbert, of Fairfax, had been working with family members, friends and a private detective to find her son, whom she believed had been kidnapped.

More than 1,200 people joined a Facebook page the family started, www.findlanegilbert.com.

"The light's still burning for him. I love him and want him back," Jerie Gilbert said in September.
