November means the beginning of a new Winter Tourist Season, and everywhere you look there are signs of preparation. On October 20, 2010 there was an announcement of an additional $76 million pesos in funding from City, State & Federal governments towards the ongoing campaign to make the downtown more people friendly and tourist attractive.

There are plans for another pedestrian bridge linking the Isla Rio Cuale to the neighborhood known as Gringo Gulch and completion of the Rio Cuale Market facades. As well there is much painting, planting; new businesses, new properties developing and all the tours and social events that go through the high season are starting again.

The new season started out by celebrating El Día de Los Muertos one of Mexico's most colorful festivals and a great opportunity to experience its culture, history and people. On November 2nd there was a Day of the Dead Celebration & Fiesta in downtown Puerto Vallarta with a Mariachi show, a performance by the Xiutla Folkloric Ballet and fireworks, plus a chance to walk around and check out all the beautiful alters and decorations.

On Saturday November 6th, Vallarta's Old Town Farmers Market launched again at the same popular location across from the restaurant Coco's kitchen at the Paradise community center.

This year, there is a new addition to the Home Tours; the International Friendship Club will continue their tours as before, however Peace Mexico is also offering their Real World Home Tours. Both are great groups raising funds for very good causes and will be featuring a great selection of local homes, from the last degree in luxury to small charming one of a kind homes. Many of the homes featured are also for rent as vacation rental properties, so this is a great opportunity to choose your next vacation property as well.

As well the Puerto Vallarta Art Walks began on October 27th. These are a great way to get to see some of Vallarta's best artists, meet the artists and gallery owners, locals, new friends and have a glass of wine, or cocktail or snack offered free at most of the galleries.

The Art Walks for the 2010/2011 season are scheduled every Wednesday from 6-10 pm through May 25th 2011. All of the galleries are in an area of about 7 blocks x 2 blocks on the North side of the River Cuale. This will be the 13th year of this great local custom.

As well there is a daytime tour hosted by Gary Thompson the owner of Galleria Pacifica. This is a free tour which starts on Tuesday, November 16th at 9:30 am and showcases the sculptures along the Malecón/Sea wall.

The tour is along the full Malecón which is about 12 blocks (approximately half a mile, so wear walking shoes,) and includes 10 sculptures all amazingly different from the Millennium at the North end of the Malecón at the Rosita Hotel, to the Angel of Hope and Messenger of Peace at the Los Arcos Amphitheatre in front of the main plaza, with such exotic options in between as the Rock Eater and Rotunda of the Sea by well known local Artist Alejandro Colunga presented to the city in 1997.

Gary Thompson is also working on a tribute to one of Puerto Vallarta's beloved artists - Ramiz Barquet, who passed away at age 90 this past July. He contributed many of the public sculptures around town including his most famous work, "Nostalgia," which has been on the Malecón ocean promenade since 1984 and has become one of the main visual symbols of Puerto Vallarta, featured in various magazines, newspapers and travel books, including on the cover of the current Moon Publications' Puerto Vallarta Handbook.

The highly romantic story of how it was inspired by his relationship with his wife Nelly has captivated the imagination of couples of all ages, serving as a symbol of universal love as well as a tribute to the special romantic quality of Vallarta.

The 16th Annual Gourmet Festival is another popular event from November 11th-21st with 10 days of amazing gourmet delights. Under the auspices of Thierry Blouet, Heinz Reize and Roland Menetrey, founders of Festival Gourmet and leaders in the local culinary scene, this year's Festival promises a full roster of master chefs, and local and international luminaries from the food world. With over 30 partner restaurants and hotels, this year's Festival is shaping up to be a must-eat event.

Looks like we're off to a great start to a great new season in Puerto Vallarta!
