Mexico City – “Mexico’s Social Security Institute (IMSS) needs to be changed, solutions need to be found. Red alerts and analyses just won’t cut it. Things have to move,” said the the Coordinator of senators of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Manlio Fabio Beltrones Rivera late last week. He further stated that the senators will demand from the Federal Government an explanation on how social security policies are going to work from now on.

“We will once again revise the financial reports and evaluate the results of previous amendments. It is certainly inadmissible to leave these things without resolution for the next administration to deal with. We will not overlook the rights of workers and employers in regard to social security. Beltrones talked about the IMSS’s budget crisis and stated that President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa has the responsibility to immediately reform the institution and provide a viable solution for the current financial crisis in the social security sector.

“This is something that is getting bigger and bigger. And although we have been warning everyone about the current situation for some time now, we still cannot figure out why people are so alarmed,” he added.

Beltrones Rivera concluded by saying: “We should follow the example of other countries. Instead of applying different solutions to the same problem or thinking about upcoming elections, they are making the right decisions regarding pension issues and social security programs. These countries invest their political capital in responsible proposals and they have guaranteed security for present and future generations.”
