Edgar "La Barbie" Valdez Villarreal
Mexico City — Mexican federal police say they captured a drug trafficker who took over as leader of a gang led by a reputed U.S.-born kingpin known as "La Barbie."

Anti-narcotics division chief Ramon Pequeno says Carlos Montemayor was arrested with the help of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and with information obtained after the Aug. 30 arrest of Edgar Valdez Villarreal.

Pequeno said Wednesday that Montemayor took over a gang led by Valdez that had been fighting for control of the Beltran Leyva drug cartel in the region south of Mexico City.

Pequeno also says Montemayor told police the gang killed 20 Mexican tourists kidnapped in September in Acapulco, mistaking them for members of the rival La Familia cartel.
