Mexican Border Town's Population Flees

Mexico City - Dozens of residents of a small Mexican border town not far from where an American tourist was reported shot and killed have fled drug violence and are seeking refuge in nearby Ciudad Miguel Aleman.

Miguel Aleman is a town of about 20,000 residents about 55 miles west of McAllen, Texas. Mayor Servando Lopez says he has welcomed families from Mier, about eight miles to the west. He says some women wept with fear and anxiety and the group prayed in a large circle at an emergency shelter.

It's unclear how long they'll stay. A town of about 6,200 residents, Mier looked like a ghost town Wednesday afternoon - streets empty, businesses closed and no sound of any people.

Mier is about 10 miles south of where American tourist David Hartley was reported shot while boating on the Mexican side of Falcon Lake.
