This week, President Calderón led the Civil Ceremony of the 195th Anniversary of the Death of José María Morelos.

The President was accompanied by the Interior Secretary and the Government of the State of Mexico; during the event, the “Casa de Morelos” Community Center was also opened.

In this building, where the Servant of the Nation spent his final hours before being shot in 1815, the caudillo’s role in the War of Independence is portrayed. The restructuring of this center was promoted by the National Institute of Anthropology and History and joins the series of renovated museums that form part of the Independence Route.

As a result of this work, carried out by the National Coordinating Board of Museums and Exhibitions (CNME), a tour was designed, focusing on the figure of José María Morelos y Pavón, the main leader during the second stage of the insurrection against the Spanish empire and a key military man, strategist and ideologist in the History of Mexico.

This museum house contains original objects of great value, such as an image of the Virgin of the Rosary, which Morelos worshipped, dating from the 18th century, a portrait of the Servant of the Nation and another of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, both by anonymous 19th century painters. The collection includes a couple of coins issued by the Insurgent during his military campaign, reproductions of the military and ecclesiastic degradation trials of Morelos, a lithograph illustrating the shooting and a replica of his death mask.

The re-opening of Morelos' House provides a fitting end to the works of the Independence Bicentennial and the Revolution Centennial in 2010.
