Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - As of April 27, 2011, street parking is no longer allowed on Calle Morelos in El Centro. Morelos runs parallel to the Malecón, one block to the east.

In an attempt to ease the flow of traffic through the downtown core, and to assist in the $22 million peso Malecón reconstruction project, street parking on Calle Morelos is now permanently prohibited.

According to PRI official Carlos Efraín Yerena, the change will benefit drivers and pedestrians as it will improve maneuverability on the key thoroughfare.

Initially conceived as a pilot project, the change has been slated for permanent implementation. By removing street parking from Morelos, transit officials hope to improve the bottleneck that occurs around Parque Hidalgo and along the Malecón. The change will also allow for more foot traffic in the downtown area.
