July 12, 2011

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - At last week's Prevention of Accidents meeting, Jalisco Department of Highways & Transportation Secretary, Diego Monraz, stated that the proposal of implementing night time bus transportation in Puerto Vallarta may be approved to start in August, 2011.

The Secretary said that there have already been meetings with CANIRAC representatives as the demand is clear, “...there is a great need to transport restaurant and night shift workers during the night.”

When questioned about the routes that will be authorized, the Secretary said that they will be basic ones with security elements. Rates will be analyzed and then dialogues will start with the transportation providers.

“No new permits will be granted. This will be accomplished with the fleet we already have...” he emphasized. “Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara are considered as international metropolises and they should have different transportation options. The first routes should start in August and they may be increased gradually.”

When asked if the implementation of these measures will cause problems with taxi drivers, considering that they are the only ones offering service during the night, Sr. Monraz said, “We have spoken with the unions and there was good communication with them and with their leader, Rafael Yerena. They are considering how this could work, but I want it made clear that no agreement has been made yet.”
