Get Ready, Ladies: 2012 is a Leap Year

December 30, 2011

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - 2012 is a leap year and will have 366 days instead of 365. That extra day is added to the shortest month, February, as the 29th day. This additional day corrects the mismatch with the length of the tropical year: 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45.25 seconds. This correction is made every four years.

Interesting Facts

• The years that are divisible by 4 are leap years, but not if they are divisible by 100, as in 1700, 1800, 1900 and 2100.

• In 400 years there must be 97 leap years.

• In the 21st century there will be 23 leap years.

And don't forget ladies, according to American tradition, February 29th is Sadie Hawkins Day, the official day of gender role-reversal. Women and girls take the bold initiative by inviting the man or boy of their choice out on a date.
