API Proposes Plan for Improving Security in Vallarta

The cruise ship terminal, located in the Marina area just north of downtown Puerto Vallarta, is a popular pick-up point for a variety of tour companies offering day trips and excursions.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - During a recent meeting of the Cruise Committee, Puerto Vallarta Port Administration (API) CEO, Alex Casarrubias Garcia, proposed that tourism service providers contribute financial resources to improve public security in the destination.

Casarrubias pointed out that isolated incidents and security concerns confirm the need for all productive business sectors to be involved in solving local problems, especially regarding matters of public safety for tourists and residents.

During the meeting, he managed to socialize the term "security," saying that all lucrative businesses and tour operators at the port terminal should contribute to a fund for improving public security. He also proposed that tour guides and taxi drivers that offer service to cruise passengers who do not take tours also chip in one dollar per passenger transported.

"We must understand that security is a social responsibility, therefore we must socialize the issue of safety in Puerto Vallarta with the participation of all service providers, employers and authorities in general, because we have to work together to address the issue in order to prevent further isolated incidents that affect us all," he stated.

But it looks like the meeting participants will have to wait for the next Cruise Committee session to get a clearer picture on how security matters in Puerto Vallarta will be addressed. "Because the issue is much more complex, and this meeting opened up the subject for analysis, at the next meeting, to be held on March 22, we will have more elements to help establish the proposed plan," Casarrubias concluded.
