August 2 Vallarta News Brief & Upcoming Events

August 2, 2013

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's headlines from local Spanish language newspapers, a few breaking Mexico news stories, and a couple of upcoming events you won't want to miss.

Trio Celebrates 16 Years in Vallarta

This month Trio is celebrating 16 years of serving gourmet "food cooked with love" to Puerto Vallarta residents and visitors. On August 14th, 1997 Trio opened its doors at Guerrero #264 in El Centro for the first time. Blending fresh and innovative ideas with his vast experience cooking in the finest dining establishments in Europe and the USA, Chef Bernhard Guth created one of Puerto Vallarta's favorite restaurants. In 2001, Chef Ulf Henriksson joined as a partner. Since then, Trio restaurant has grown, but chef-owners Bernhard Guth and Ulf Henriksson still have the same commitment towards the simple idea of using the best local ingredients cooked in a Mediterranean style fused with Mexican influences and ideas from around the world to create a very personal cuisine. To celebrate the restaurant's 16th anniversary, they are offering a 16% discount on all food and beverage during the entire month of August. For more information or reservations, call (322) 222-2196 or visit TrioPV.com.

Mexican President's Thyroid Surgery Successful

Surgery on President Enrique Peña Nieto to remove a thyroid nodule Wednesday was successful and went exactly as planned, his staff and surgeon said. The nodule showed no signs of malignancy, said his surgeon, Brig. Gen. Juan Felipe Sanchez. "The results are very good," Sanchez told reporters in a news conference after the surgery. Peña Nieto, 47, was awake and recovering in his room in the Central Military Hospital after the procedure that took less than two hours, said Chief-of-Staff Aurelio Nuno. He will spend two days in the hospital and two more of recovery, holding private work meetings. He will return to his full schedule next week. No one was designated to act in his place during that time. Mexico's Constitution says nothing about such brief periods of incapacity.

Estero El Salado's 13th Anniversary

A celebration was held at Estero el Salado on Friday, July 26th to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the preserve being declared a natural protected area by the Jalisco State Congress. More than 600 people came out to enjoy the various environmental education activities the estero had planned to celebrate the occasion, including boat rides through the estuary, interacting with the area's wildlife, including macaws and young crocodiles, and participating in the release of 850 iguana hatchlings that were born in the University of Guadalajara's UMA Cipactli reptile facilities. An awards ceremony to thank all the individuals, organizations and institutions that have contributed to the conservation of Puerto Vallarta's natural protected area over the past 13 years, was an important part of the program.

PV Mayor Makes Back to School Easier for Local Families

On August 21st, Puerto Vallarta's municipal government will provide 53,329 public school students with backpacks and school supplies thanks to the Directorate General of Social Development's "Advancing Students" program. The Director General of Social Development, Arturo Davalos, indicated that on instructions from Mayor Ramón Guerrero Martínez, the City of Puerto Vallarta will use municipal resources to provide all children with backpacks filled with school supplies, so that parents will not have to worry about how to pay for the tools their children will need this coming school year. The 38 preschools, 108 primary, and 31 secondary schools that provide public education in the municipality are part of this program, and each of its students are entitled to this benefit. "The program will support 9,583 preschool students, 30,242 primary students and 13,504 secondary students," said the head of Social Development. In addition, Davalos explained that "Advancing Students" also provides uniform and scholarship support for those currently enrolled in the program. "Around 20,000 uniforms will be given to the children of the parents or guardians who previously requested support from Social Development," he said.
