Mexico City Makes Latin America's Largest Sandwich

August 2, 2013

Thousands of pieces of bread, lettuce, onion, tomato, and 70 other ingredients were used to craft Latin Americas biggest ever sandwich, including hundreds of liters of mayonnaise, mustard, and spicy sauces

Mexico City, Mexico - Dozens of people in Mexico City on Wednesday crafted a 190-feet-long monster sandwich - making it the biggest sandwich ever made in Latin America.

Local authorities and more than 80 local businesses rolled up their sleeves to prepare the sandwich - known as 'torta' in Mexico.

Thousands of pieces of bread, lettuce, onion, and tomato were mixed with more dozens of ingredients, including hundreds of liters of mayonnaise, mustard, and spicy sauces. Each section of the 1653 lb super torta had a different flavor cooked up by local chefs.

Organized by local government in the Mexican capital, officials hope the mammoth sandwich will give the nutritious Mexican torta a much-needed boost in sales as it struggles to compete with imported fast food chains.

"We're celebrating the tenth anniversary of this "mega-torta." It's a family event, its an event where people can become familiar with great Mexican food. It's a typically Mexican event and we don't want to lose this tradition," said government official, Marco Aguilar.

With large crowds waiting for a taste of the mammoth sandwich, torta lover Jose Carlos Ramirez gave chefs the thumbs up for their creation.

"Very good, excellent. A good festival," he said.

For organizers, the sandwich far exceeded the record they set ten years ago with the first ever Torta Festival in the capital.

"This mega-torta measures 190 feet. At the first event it measured 82 feet," declared local government official, Jose Manuel Ballesteros.

Despite its super size, the sandwich didn't quite make it into the big league of sandwiches. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest sandwich ever made was in 2005 in the United States and weighed 5,440 lb, while the honor of the longest sandwich goes to a troupe of Lebanese restaurants who constructed a sandwich over 2,411 feet long in 2011.

The long torta challenge is part of a five-day fair that looks to support the traditional Mexican sandwich.

Event organizers expect more than 350,000 visitors during the fair and hope to sell hundreds of thousands of tortas.
