Pet Parrot Rats Out Mexico City Man at DUI Checkpoint

January 17, 2014

A Mexico City man charged with DUI was allowed to take his parrot to jail with him, after the bird ratted him out at an alcohol checkpoint. From here on the bird should watch it’s back - prisoners hate 'stool pigeons.'

Mexico City, Mexico - A Mexico City man’s pet parrot turned out to be more of a stool pigeon after it squealed on his allegedly drunk owner to the cops.

Guillermo Reyes was probably wishing he'd chosen a faithful dog for a pet when he was stopped at a routine alcohol checkpoint in the nation's capital last week.

According to Spanish-language newspaper El Universal, as Reyes got out of his blue Chevy to be tested, a voice from inside the vehicle chirped, "he's drunk, he's drunk."

The police peered into the vehicle expecting to find another person, but as it turned out, the voice belonged to the man's parrot.

The brainy bird apparently knew what he was talking about, as police say Reyes failed a breathalyzer test and was subsequently arrested.

When Animal Control officers were called to take the mouthy critter away, they discovered that the bird and his owner shared a very close bond. Reyes told them the bird is with him at all times and could suffer stress if separated, so the authorities decided to put them in jail together.

The duo was taken to El Torito, also known as the "hangover prison," where anyone in Mexico City found driving with more than the legal 0.08 alcohol limit is taken to sober up and stay the night.
