May 6, 2014

The market for bottled water in Mexico reached a value of well over $10 billion in 2013, representing a growth of 11.6 percent over 2012. Between 2008 and 2013 the water market in Mexico grew 53.5 percent.

Mexico is the world leader in consumption of bottled water with annual consumption totaling 169.8 liters per person, beating Italy where its residents consume 147.5 liters per year on average.

"While 85 percent of sales of bottled water is 20 liter jugs, water bottles for individual consumption is the most profitable. Hence the entry of an increasing number of brands," said Stephanie Sidaoui, Chief Executive Officer of Mexico’s bottled water company B’ui.

As Mexico's demand for bottled water is growing at the rate of 20 percent annually, premium brands such as Evian, Perrier, VIS, Pellegrino, Voss, Fiji and B’ui successfully sell their products at prices that are double the cost of regular bottled water. A liter of bottled water ranges from $8 - $16 pesos, while the premium brands cost between $13 and up to $42 pesos.

The market for bottled water in Mexico reached a value of $10.36 billion in 2013, representing a growth of 11.6 percent over 2012. Between 2008 and 2013 the water market in Mexico grew 53.5 percent.

The five most popular brands of bottled water are Bonafont, Ciel, Purity Aga, Electropura, and Epura, in the premium brand category Evian, Perrier, Pellegrino, and Fiji are the leaders

It is estimated that by 2015, Mexico will also be the number one consumer of bottled water by total liters with almost 95 billion per year - exceeding the consumption of the United States and China, who are currently in first place for total volume.
