Puerto Vallarta Celebrates World Environment Day 2015

June 4, 2015

Here in Puerto Vallarta, CUCosta and Estero El Salado will be celebrating World Environment Day 2015 on June 4th and 5th in conjunction with the 15th Anniversary of the university's Reptilario Cipactli.

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - Every year, the United Nations Environment Program honors World Environment Day (WED) on June 5 to raise awareness about environmental issues and call for action. This year's slogan is "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care."

The theme for 2015 is sustainable lifestyles. In other words, how the well-being of humanity, the environment and economies ultimately depends on the responsible management of the planet's natural resources.

The topic is a particularly powerful one, because there's room for everyone to take a moment to question how we live and how it impacts the planet. The theme asks everyone to evaluate our consumer habits: how we shop, eat and travel.

Many of the Earth's ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our way of life. Living well within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future.

Here in Puerto Vallarta, the University of Guadalajara's Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUCosta) and Estero El Salado will be celebrating World Environment Day on June 4th and 5th in conjunction with the 15th Anniversary of the Reptilario Cipactli, an on-campus sanctuary and research facility that focuses on the conservation of reptiles (including turtles, iguanas, alligators and crocodiles) in the Banderas Bay area.

The celebrations include a series of talks, presentations, and panel discussions on conservation and environmental education that begin with an opening speech in the Rectory Auditorium of CUCosta University by Rector Dr. Marco Antonio Cortés Guardado at 12:00 pm on June 4 and continue throughout the two-day event.

Other activities include tours, free boat rides through the channels, a display of nature photography, games and entertainment for the entire family at El Salado Estuary. Click HERE for more information, driving directions, and the full schedule of events.

World Environment Day is the time to realize that caring for the Earth is everyone's responsibility. Join Estero El Salado and CUCosta in celebrating World Environment Day in Puerto Vallarta on June 4 and 5, 2015.
