August 14, 2015

From live music and theater to cultural festivals, sporting events, charitable efforts and special interest group meetings, there's always something fun happening in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay.

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around the Republic, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. Here's a look at some of this week's Mexico headlines and Banderas Bay area news, plus some upcoming events that you won't want to miss.

Kylie Jenner Celebrates 18th Birthday in Punta de Mita

Feliz cumpleaños! Kylie Jenner jetted off to Mexico with her boyfriend, Tyga, on Monday, August 10, to continue her 18th birthday celebration. The trip comes after the birthday girl was celebrated by friends and family in West Hollywood last Sunday. The couple is reportedly staying at family friend Joe Francis' opulent Villa Aramara in Punta de Mita. Still, the couple will enjoy their Puerto Vallarta vacation for only so long ... Kylie's due in Montreal for a $100K paid club appearance this coming Sunday, in honor of her birthday. And yet that's just the tip of the iceberg for Kylie. She already had private performances by Fetty Wap and Post Malone at her nightclub birthday party; received a $15K Hermes bag from her mom and got a $260K Ferrari from Tyga. What more could a girl want?

Mexico Bans Free Baby Formula in Bid to Boost Low Breastfeeding Rates

The Mexican government says it will no longer allow giveaways of baby formula at hospitals and clinics in a bid to boost low breastfeeding rates. The federal health risks oversight agency said this week anyone can still buy formula at stores, and it can be supplied at a doctor's request or for research purposes. But the agency argued free samples must be excluded from private and public hospitals "because it is a commercial practice that may discourage breastfeeding." Only one in seven mothers in Mexico breast feeds exclusively in the first six months, as the World Health Organization recommends. Mexico's rate is among the lowest in Latin America. Mother's milk is richer than formula in nutrients and antibodies that protect newborns from infections.

New Flights Increase Puerto Vallarta's Connectivity

New routes from the northern city of San Luis Potosí to Puerto Vallarta have just been announced by Transportes Aéreos Regionales (TAR) a regional airline that also operates flights from Guadalajara, Monterrey, Durango, Aguascalientes, León and Querétaro. Most of the flights are short, 1.5 hours or less. The new routes allow for even more Mexican nationals the opportunity to enjoy Puerto Vallarta, but they also provide international visitors with even more options to explore the country's destinations, some of which stand out due to their colonial history and appeal. Seven Arrested in Nayarit with 372 Sea Turtle Eggs

Seven people were arrested in the Pacific Coast state of Nayarit in possession of 372 sea turtle eggs, Mexico’s environmental protection agency, known as Profepa, said in a statement. Profepa said the enforcement actions in the municipality of Compostela were spurred by the presence of people selling turtle eggs on area beaches, including Platanitos, Playa de Ixtapa, Boca de Custodio and Boca de Chila. After intercepting five people transporting 175 eggs in a 1996 Nissan pickup truck, authorities surprised two men as they were plundering sea turtle nests, seizing 112 eggs from one of them and 85 from the other. The suspects were handed over to a delegation of the federal Attorney General’s Office in Bahia de Banderas, Nayarit. Sale of sea turtles and their eggs has been banned in Mexico since 2006 and the seven suspects in Nayarit could face up to nine years in prison as well as hefty fines, Profepa said.
