Informative, Entertaining Talks at The Boutique Theatre

November 16, 2017

TED Talks will be presented every other Tuesday at The Boutique Theatre. Each week, an 'interesting person' living in Vallarta will share their expertise and insights on a variety of socially relevant topics.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The Boutique Dinner Theater continues its wildly popular educational discussions for a second season. "TED Talk Tuesdays" will be presented from 9-11 am on alternating Tuesdays throughout the 2017-2018 season.

Each week, an "interesting person" living in Puerto Vallarta will share his or her expertise and insights, on a variety of socially relevant topics.

Catherine Caldera, Publicity Director for the Boutique, is producing this year's all-new line-up. "Norma Schuh did such a fantastic job creating and launching the program last year," Caldera said. "The talks were one of our best attended programs, bringing together an audience community of thinkers, learners, and visionaries. The Boutique is excited to continue the tradition."

Each talk concludes with a half-hour interactive discussion, in which audience members may make comments and ask questions of the speaker. Most presentations will be accompanied by slide illustrations and other media.

"Come play with us is the Boutique Theatre's slogan," Caldera said. "Now we're extending that to Come learn with us."

Audience-goers are encouraged to remain after the presentations, to cultivate friendships and continue discussions, during a no-host lunch. The Boutique Theater is located upstairs at Nacho Daddy, a popular restaurant, bar and music venue, at 287 Basilio Badillo on Vallarta's south side. Its "Mex-Tex" menu includes such favorites as Tortilla Soup, Steak Nachos, and Chicken Fajitas.

Tickets cost $250 pesos each. While tickets may be remaining at the door for presentations, some ticket-seekers had to be turned away last year. Advance ticket purchases are recommended, from btpv.org, or at the box office.

Here is the 2017-18 "TED Talk Tuesday" schedule:

November 21: Howard Johns - Historian, TV Personality, Author

This controversial new book goes behind-the-scenes about the making of the landmark 1963 movie, The Night of the Iguana. Johns examines the chain of events surrounding John Huston's classic film, and its effects that shaped Puerto Vallarta. The movie had its greatest impact on the native inhabitants in the isolated jungles of Mismaloya, where many previously had no contact with the outside world.

"I interviewed many people," Johns said, "but the best sources of information were the stars themselves, people such as Elizabeth Taylor and the family and friends of John Huston, who shared interesting stories."

Johns doesn't apologize for the reactions people may have to his material. "I like controversy. Without controversy there would be no attention focused on important events. Issues would not be discussed. Problems would not be resolved."

Johns discusses how the movie put PV under a worldwide spotlight it had never experienced before, and the results of the media circus. And, how could one forget, the sizzling affair between the movie's star, Richard Burton, and the legendary beauty Elizabeth Taylor.

"This is a book of many parts," Johns said. "It's modern history. It's allegory. It's celebrity. Most of all it's a reflection of life."

While living in Palm Springs, California, Johns wrote "Palm Springs Confidential: Playground of the Stars." He now lives in Puerto Vallarta.

The book is available in Kindle format from amazon.com. Johns' website is astolenparadise.com.
