Puerto Vallarta Works to Fortify Beach Certifications

July 18, 2018

Puerto Vallarta is working to not only maintain it's clean beach certifications, but also to have more local beaches certified. One proposal is a local laboratory to expedite the analysis of water samples.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - During the XIII Clean Beach National Assembly held in Bahías de Huatulco July 4-7, clean beach certifications for 10 Vallarta-Nayarit beaches, along with the Marina Riviera Nayarit, were officially renewed for the 2018-2019 season.

At last weekend's LXXXIII ordinary session of the Jalisco-Nayarit Interstate Committee of Clean Beaches, the Municipal Deputy Director of Ecology, Albino Garay de la O, proposed that the committee create a laboratory, either in Puerto Vallarta or the neighboring municipality of Bahía de Banderas, for the analysis of water samples taken from the different beaches in the region.

He indicated that this would help streamline the process of obtaining the results that determine if any of the beaches are outside the permitted parameters, and expedite the corresponding actions that contribute to maintaining water quality.

The Deputy Director of Ecology said that the municipal government is committed to continue certifying our beaches and maintaining water quality, but since the current budget does not provide for these items, he also proposed that a request be made to the state and federal governments for the funds needed to cover these expenses.

"We want to see if it is possible for either the state or the federation to provide these resources, which would ease the municipality's financial burden and give us more time to concentrate on the certification of more local beaches," he said.

Finally, he said that according to the latest reports, 95 percent of the tourists that visit Puerto Vallarta spend time on the different beaches of the destination, so the municipal government has focused on working on the certification of these public spaces.
