Even before Mexicana Airlines first started using native son Manuel Lepe's naif paintings of Vallarta to promote the destination, there were already a number of art galleries and local artists established here in Vallarta.
There's something about Puerto Vallarta that's always seemed to attract artists and art lovers. Even before Mexicana Airlines first started using native son Manuel Lepe's naif paintings of Vallarta to promote the destination, there were already a number of art galleries and local artists established here in Vallarta.

Today, after 55 years of top quality art being created and shown in the art galleries of our special city, Puerto Vallarta has become one of Mexico's premier art meccas. As a result, on December 12th, the Department of Culture inaugurated the first "Vallarta Collection" art exhibition on the City Hall patio.

Presenting the works of 26 significant artists who represent 55 years of Vallartan visual arts history, including Ramón Barragán, Joaquín Rodríguez Pedroza, Esteban Ramírez Güereño, Manuel Lepe, Daniel Lechón, Manuel Martínez, Ed Starr, Daniel Incháurregui, Javier Niño, José Marca, Regino Carrillo, Elena Munguía, Marta Gilbert, Meg Munro, Ada Colorina, Martina Goldberg, Cathy Von Rohr, Manuel Adriá, Roberto Bermejo, Francisco Sanmiguel, Tellosa, Ramiz Barquet, Octavio González, Edgar Martínez, Francisco Quintero y Jorge Rico, the exhibition will remain open to the public until the 12th of January.

According to Mayor Gustavo González Villaseñor, a permanent space will be made available for the Vallarta Collection in the new Casa de la Cultura facilities, which, according to the current plan, will occupy the ground floor of the Municipal Presidency by the end of next year.

With the coming of the new year, many Puerto Vallarta art galleries are brimming with new exhibitions featuring art in all mediums - paintings, sculptures, pottery and folk art - by local artists, internationally famous painters, young emerging artists, and Mexico's most celebrated masters.

Join gallery owner Gary Thompson every Tuesday morning at 10 am from January through April for an artist studio tour. Starting with coffee and pastries at Galería Pacifico, you will then visit the studios of Richard Baker and Ramiz Barquet. Ticket are just $100 Pesos. For more information, visit Galería Pacifico at Aldama # 174 in downtown Vallarta or call 222-1982.

The Old Town Art Walk is celebrating its tenth year as one of the most important and popular cultural events in Puerto Vallarta, growing from only six art galleries to 17 this season. These 17 galleries host free cocktail expositions every Wednesday night from 6 to 10 pm until April 26, 2006, so be sure to pencil in a visit this month.

Speaking of "penciling in," don't miss the exhibit of Pencil Drawings by Ernesto Román Mata that are on display in Bernice Star Hall at Los Mangos Library through January 15th. The library, located at 1001 Francisco Villa Avenue, is open every Mon-Fri from 9 am to 9 pm, and from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturdays. For more information call 224-9966.

From 6-10 pm on Friday January 6th, the Centro Cultural Vallartense on the east side of the Isla del Rio will be hosting an opening reception for artist Emilia Vazquez. This fabulous Art Exposition will feature the sculpture and ceramics of this talented artist.

Also this month, a community of artists in Nuevo Vallarta are presenting an art show to raise the public’s awareness of the importance of the mangrove estuaries throughout the Banderas Bay area.

The exhibition, Estero El Salado, will be presented at the Estudio Café at the Marina in Nuevo Vallarta from January 12th-22nd, with a reception on January 12th at 5 pm, when the Director of the Estero El Salado will give an informative talk.

Estudio Café is the café/studio of resident artist Federico Leon de la Vega. Some of the other participating artists are Nelly Barquet, Evelyn Boren, Ada Colorina, Angelina Kyba and Meg Munro.

A new art space, Galería å Arte Contemporáneo, recently opened at 104 Allende St in downtown Vallarta, offering an innovative venue for displaying - and selling - the artistic creations of contemporary artists.

In the expert hands of gallery owners Karla González and Atmaran From, who already operated galleries in the State of Oaxaca, this exhibition hall is breaking rules when it comes to incorporating forms ranging from sculpture and painting to photography and the history of art through books, which are also for sale.

"For us, having this place means that we are exploring, while remaining open to the proposals of Vallarta’s artists, in fact we already have Alicia Bueno’s work, and we're hoping to introduce new artists soon," says the young owner. For more information, visit the gallery, call 223-8246, or send an email to: a_galeria@yahoo.com.
