The Corner Workshop, located on the corner of Guerrero and Matamoras, is offering Summer Art Courses for Children every Mon-Fri from July 14th to August 14th.
Puerto Vallarta - Though the 2005-2006 Art Walk season is behind us, here in Puerto Vallarta, we are fortunate to be able to enjoy the works of many artists year-round. Even before Mexicana Airlines first started using native son Manuel Lepe's naif paintings to promote the destination, Puerto Vallarta's first informal art galleries opened to showcase local talent.

By the late '70s, the Latin American school of magic realism was being taken seriously and commercial art galleries began to spring up, including the still-thriving Galeria Uno. Today, after 55 years of top quality art being created and shown in over 30 art galleries scattered throughout our special city, Puerto Vallarta has become a mecca for those who collect, study, or just take pleasure in viewing art.

And though some galleries are closed for vacation, or are cutting back on their hours of operation during the summer months, there is still plenty to see and do for art lovers of all ages...

This July, the Summer Art Sale continues at Galeria Vallarta, with paintings by several of their major artists at special discounts of up to 30% and all posters and signed lithographs from 20% to 50% off. Owner Barbara Peters recently announced that plans are underway for courses in making silver jewelry starting in October. They will be taught by some of the expert artisans that show their work in Galeria Vallarta. If you are interested in learning the art of silver working, lost wax methods, stone setting, etc., send an email to webart@prodigy.net.mx or call Barbara at 222-0290.

The recently created "El Taller de la Esquina" [The Corner Workshop], located on the corner of Guerrero and Matamoras, focuses its efforts primarily on women expressing themselves through art, but anyone who loves to be creative and wants to channel it through the Beaux Arts will find plenty of opportunity here.

They are offering Summer Art Courses for Children every Mon-Fri from July 14th to August 14th. Children ages 6-9 can learn about textures, colors and drawing with geometric figures. Kids age 10-13 can practice drawing the human form and learn about perspective for the composition of a project, and teenagers [ages 14 & up] can attend workshops in drawing, engraving and painting with acrylic and oil. Courses cost just $50 pesos per class, with 2 classes available each day, a morning class, from 11 am-1 pm, and an evening class, held from 5-7 pm.

The Corner Workshop also offers permanent courses for adults, which include linoleum drawing, engraving and acrylic painting, every Mon, Wed and Fri from 5-6 pm or Tuesdays & Fridays from 10-11 am. Classes cost just $20 pesos each, but as the facility was not set up "for profit," the instructors ask for donations to sustain the project. They are currently in need of tables, chairs, easels, drawing and painting materials, sewing machines and, of course, cash always helps. For more information, contact Hilda Curiel at 222-6284.

Just because you are a parent doesn't mean that you have to let your kids drive you crazy during their summer vacation. This summer, Galería Nana will be hosting Cursos de Artes Plásticas for children ages 5-15 from July 3rd-August 19th. Arts Professor Jimena Odetti will prepare each class with a different activity, ranging from finger painting, water color and tempera to modeling clay, stamping and collage.

Classes, which are limited to seven children so instructors can give each child individual attention, will be held every Mon-Fri from 5-7 pm and every Saturday from 12-2 pm at a cost of just $600 pesos per month. For more information call 113-0475, or stop by La Nana Galería de Arte at Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez 155 in downtown Vallarta, between Juarez and Morelos.

El Centro Cultural Cuale is also offering art classes for both children and adults this summer, including Sculpture for Kids with Antonio Montaña on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm for $200 pesos per month; Introduction to Painting with Héctor Ponce on Tuesdays and Thursdays at $300 pesos/month, and Intermediate Drawing Classes taught by Luis Miguel Sepùlveda every Mon, Wed & Fri from 10 am to 2 pm, for $200 pesos [+ materials] per month. For more information, call the Rio Cuale Cultural Center at 223-0095.
