Becas Delivers the Goods
email this pageprint this pageemail usPeter Gray - PVNN

Late August is a busy time for the Becas Vallarta members who tackle the job of getting over three hundred scholarship children together so that they can be supplied with school things and money for the coming year. The Los Mangos Library kindly provides the venue for meeting with the students.

It is worth recognizing that the Becas Vallarta scholarship program has run interruptedly since 1961. That's forty-five years of low key, but highly effective, support for children who are exceptionally good students, but who lack the financial resources that would allow them to continue in school.

Each year the number of qualified students increases. And each year the number who deserve to go on to University grows. That means that more and more effort has to go into fund-raising. The yearly cost of supporting the current number of students runs at over one million pesos. And of course costs go up every year.

So, at the same time that this year's students were receiving their grants. Becas Vallarta, along with Agape, introduced the Cruzada Altruista which will run from now until December. The challenge is to sell one hundred thousand Cruzada bracelets for twenty pesos each, in just four months.

That's a brave and ambitious goal to set. To accomplish it, Becas Vallarta calls upon the local community to support this effort by not only buying a bracelet but offering to help sell them too.
