Thoughts on Flight 93
email this pageprint this pageemail usDavid Lord - PVNN

I went to the local theater last night to see the movie "Flight 93," and I must tell you that the rage I feel toward the Fanatical Muslim Terrorist that attacked innocent civilians is only matched by my contempt for an Administration that has so misdirected the United States response to terror.

The misguided and foolish occupation of Iraq has cost us the opportunity to render the Terrorist into bone and dust and a bad memory. We have demolished our chance by the direction of an Administration so ignorant that words cannot, do not suffice - but "Dunce" will do, only because he holds the Office of President.

VETERAN NEWS AND UPDATES

Hepatitis C is a major concern for Veterans as it occurs in the general population at a rate of 1.8 per cent while in the Veterans population at 8.2 per cent.

Scientists did not discover Hepatitis C until 1989. A blood test was not developed until 1990. VA adjudicators do not seem to recognize these facts. In one case, a veteran wrote on his military-separation exam questionnaire that he was hospitalized for three days in Vietnam due to Hepatitis C.

Despite this, the BVA denied the claim, noting "there is no indication in any of the service medical records that there was any diagnosis of Hepatitis C made by a physician based on laboratory testing." This decision clearly is unfair since there was no test for Hepatitis C during the Vietnam War.

In another case, the BVA cited as significant the fact that there were no findings regarding Hepatitis C on a 1972 VA exam, a year after the veteran's discharge. This was despite the fact that records show he received 500 cc of blood for treatment of multiple wounds.

Please, Veterans, make sure to request a screening for Hepatitis type C when scheduling appointments at the VA and for the Veterans living in Mexico they should request testing from their local doctor.

In addition, when the doctor writes his diagnosis make sure that he connects the cause of the infection to a service related injury or incident. A statement such as, "It is as likely as not related to Military Service" is needed to connect the disease to Military Service.

The Cost of Living Adjustment of 3.3% will be showing up on the December 1st check for Veterans and/or Dependants. The effect will be that both Pension and Compensation rates will be adjusted to the new higher levels. Veterans that are single and receiving a Pension will be given the following rates:

IMPROVED DISABILITY PENSION

A single Veteran receives $10,929 - or if House bound $13,356 - or if Hospitalized $18,234 per year, but is paid in monthly installments so divide the amount by twelve for the monthly rate payable.

A Veteran that is married receives $14,313 - or if housebound $16,740- or if hospitalized $21,615 per year paid in monthly installments.

In addition the amounts listed above also allow for additional reimbursements for medical related expenses up to the amount of the pension. So that a single Veteran that is paid in cash a total of $10,929 per year and has medical expenses over the same calendar year they will be reimbursed dollar for dollar up to the amount of the pension received.

There is a deduction of around five hundred dollars that covers the cost of the deductable fee charged by the VA, so a single Veteran may receive as much as an additional $10,429, and a married Veteran as much as an additional $13,813 for both husband or the wife when medical related cost are encountered. Compensation is a payment for those disabilities that occurred as a result of Military Service not derived from your own willful misconduct.

NAVY VET WHO LIED ABOUT RESCUE GUILTY OF FRAUD
[from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel staff and the Associated Press]

A 58-year old Navy veteran who collected more than $350,000 in government benefits after falsely claiming he took part in a failed rescue that caused him post-traumatic stress disorder could spend the next 25 years in prison.

Keith A. Roberts of Gillett was found guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court of five counts of mail fraud for falsifying claims for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits from 1994 to 2004.

Roberts claimed to have attempted to rescue a fellow airman in 1969 at an air base in Naples, Italy, when a C-54 airplane's landing gear collapsed, crushing the other airman, an indictment alleged.

While the rescue efforts actually happened, Roberts fabricated his role in them, according to the indictment.
