Rotary Clubs Support Becas Vallarta
email this pageprint this pageemail usPeter Gray - PVNN

Becas Vallarta A.C. received a substantial infusion of funds on November 3rd, thanks to the work of the Banderas Bay Rotary Club here in Puerto Vallarta, the Brother Rotary Club Kingston-Frontenac and the Rotary Club of Ontario, Canada.
We read much too much of war and strife across the world these days. So, it is a blessed relief to be reminded of the countless acts of generosity that still cross national borders every day.

The following account records the way Canadian dollars have found their way from Canada to Puerto Vallarta, to bring uniforms, school supplies and tuition for some of the brightest and best children, who only need financial help to make the most of their lives.

Major credit for bringing these two Canadian Clubs together with the Banderas Bay Rotarians goes to a really generous-hearted couple, Perry and Anna Marie Bamji. They have worked for a long time, forging this link between Canada and our local Rotary Clubs and were on hand to see the happy result of their efforts fulfilled.

The gift was celebrated at the Occidental Allegro Hotel, Nuevo Vallarta, at an event hosted by hotel manager, Jesus Aguirre, who is himself a Rotarian. Jose Antonio Bautista, President of the Banderas Bay Rotary Club presented the Matching Grant (#59865) to Mariel Fregoso, President of Becas Vallarta A.C.

Among the other Rotarians present were Jorge and Heidy Careaga of the Banderas Bay Rotarian Club. Also representing Becas Vallarta A.C. were Carlos Fregoso and Cuca de Nino.

The donation totaled $265,200 pesos. This will be allocated in three parts. $74,749.91 pesos for uniforms; $16,238.44 pesos for school supplies and $174,211.65 pesos for tuition.

The source of the funding included sums from the Rotary Club Kingston-Frontenac ($1653 USD); the Rotary Club of Kingston ($4132 USD); the Rotary District 7040 ($5785 USD); the Rotary Club of Banderas Bay; ($3150 USD) and the International Rotary Foundation ($10,253 USD.)

The exponential growth of Puerto Vallarta means that the goal of Becas Vallarta A.C. - which is simply to provide education for really deserving, smart kids - becomes more demanding with each passing year. Anyone who feels moved to lend a hand in support of this organization can call Mariel Fregoso at 221-0789.
