Toys for Tots Supports Local Kids
email this pageprint this pageemail usPeter Gray - PVNN

Jerry Lafferty (L) and Jeff Miltenberger (R) of the Navy League thank local Scotiabank manager Fernando Meneses for the magnificent donation of $250,000 pesos.
This promises to be a banner year for Toys for Tots - thanks particularly to a new sponsor - Scotiabank. Their magnificent donation of $250,000 pesos has given Toys for Tots the capability not only to set an objective of distributing 10,000 toys around next Kings' Day (up from 8000 last year) but to undertake a new plan to construct two or three playgrounds for children in the poorest areas around the Bay.

This will help fulfill the Toys for Tots objective of not only bringing a rare moment of joy to needy kids during the holiday season, but also to encourage among these children a sense of social inclusion and pride. A dedicated playground means a better environment for poor children to have a sense of being valued and loved year-round.

The Toys for Tots December fund-raisers are always among the most popular events of the season. This year, the Toys for Tots Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, December 9th with a 12 noon shotgun start at the Vista Weiskopf course.

The annual Dinner dance will follow the next day, Sunday December 10th starting at 6:30 pm at the Marriott Hotel. The golf tournament plus the dinner dance is priced at $165 (1800 pesos). Or you can attend just the dinner dance for $65 (700 pesos).

This year, the golf tournament price includes a Toys for Tots golf cap and a sleeve of premium golf balls - plus a host of prizes to be won by players of all levels.

The dinner dance includes a gourmet menu prepared by Marriott's award-winning chef, all beverages (including alcoholic) for the entire evening, a great dance band, door prizes galore and the highest quality silent auction in Puerto Vallarta.

All in all, a fantastic value, sharing great company and most of all helping put smiles on 10,000 deserving faces.

All money received goes directly to Toys for Tots activities. Our very generous sponsors pick up all the costs. These include the Marriott CasaMagna Resort, the Vista Vallarta Golf Club, Coldwell Banker/La Costa Realty, Continental Airlines, Scotiabank and TaylorMade-Adidas. Plus, of course, the important role played by the more than 100 local small businesses that support Toys for Tots every year.

The local Toys for Tots effort is one of hundreds around the world, all triggered originally by a US Marines initiative at the close of World War II.

In Puerto Vallarta, the key players in organizing this charity are the folks at the Marriott Hotel, the Navy League Council of Puerto Vallarta, the International Friendship Club and US Consular Agent Kelly Trainor.

Tickets are available at the Marina and Vista Golf Club pro shops; the Marriott concierge, the IFC clubhouse and from many Navy League members. You can also call Jerry Lafferty at 221-6156.
