Give a Kid a Backpack Foundation collects backpacks filled with school supplies and hand delivers them to school aged children living in poverty. For details or to volunteer, call 877-452-7225 or email info@givebackpacks.com.

Good day! I just return from a visit to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I was there delivering 650 backpacks to children in the Banderas Bay area colonias of Mojoneras, Escuela Volcanes and at Casa Hogar Maximo Cornejo y Escuela in Bucerias.

When I arrived on February 15th, we headed directly to the Salvation Army to pack the backpacks with school supplies. Volunteers from Give a Kid a Backpack chapters in Michigan, Canada and members of the local Salvation Army helped with the packing.

At around 6 pm, 40 backpacks were ready to be distributed to the first group of kids, who were eagerly waiting at the Salvation Army. It is children like these that make us smile and make us realize that by giving these children a tool – a backpack filled with school supplies – we are making their dreams of a better life come true.

The next day we visited Casa Hogar Maximo Cornejo, where we delivered 30 backpacks to the children. They were so very happy to receive the backpacks that we just had to take some time to play and visit with them before we called it a day.

On Saturday, together with the Salvation Army, we distributed around 230 backpacks. We had two groups: one in the morning and one in the evening. The children were so happy to receive their backpacks that many children put them on immediately after we distributed them.

Other kids looked inside to see what they got. All of the backpacks contained basic school supplies: pencils, pens, rulers, erasers, notebooks, colored pencils, a pencil sharpener, glue and scissors.

Monday was our biggest day! We visited Escuela Volcanes where we hand-delivered 225 backpacks in the morning and another 125 backpacks to a school in Bucerias in the afternoon.

Again, the children were very glad to receive the backpacks and the first thing they did was open them to see what was inside. Many backpacks had cards that were made by children in the US. These cards were sent with message of hope and peace.

Despite their abject poverty, these children all have something in common: a desire to learn, a shimmer in their eyes, and a great appreciation of the gift of a backpack filled with school supplies. By bringing them these donations, we are sending the children a message of hope for a better future.

Give a Kid a Backpack is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that enriches the lives of impoverished grade school children in underdeveloped nations. We involve the youth of America to become culturally and economically aware of the children living in poverty in foreign countries. We partner with U.S. and foreign charities by working together to supply and deliver backpacks filled with school supplies to these kids.

You can help us make each and every one of these children feel valued by aiding in their educational and social development. Individuals, groups and businesses are encouraged to donate their time by joining the campaign or fundraising efforts to support a project or by providing a corporate employee fund to support the group.
