Puerto Vallarta - Toys for Tots is usually associated with Christmas or Three King's Day. So why on a sunny April afternoon were representatives of Toys for Tots and dozens of children gathered in a dusty colonia in Nayarit?

Because on April 30th, 2008, Children's Day in Mexico, a brand new playground constructed by the Toys for Tots program was inaugurated in the Los Angeles colonia of the small town of San Vicente.

Puerto Vallarta Navy League president Jeff Miltenberger, US Consular agent Kelly Trainor, and Bahia de Banderas Presidente Dr. Jaime Cuevas were all present to officially open the new playground. The Puerto Vallarta Navy League is the sponsor of Toys for Tots in the area.

Local children waited (somewhat) patiently for the ceremony to be completed before happily hurrying to try out the new equipment. Local women provided cold drinks and a fruit snack to everyone present.

Dr. Cuevas thanked the Toys for Tots program for the donation of this playground, the second to be built in the Bahia de Banderas municipality. Last year, Toys for Tots constructed a similar playground in the small town of Guamachil.

"This playground is a great thing for the children of San Vicente," said Cuevas. "Physical exercise is very important for them, much better than sitting in front of the television."

Cuevas went on to advise the parents, "This playground is here in your colonia, you are the guardians of it and should help keep it from being damaged."

Navy League President Miltenberger thanked the municipality for their cooperation in getting the playground project built quickly.

The San Vicente playground is the fourth one to be built by Toys for Tots in the last 2 years. Two are in Puerto Vallarta and two in Nayarit. The playgrounds are funded by donations to the Toys for Tots program.

In 2007, approximately 10,000 toys were distributed by volunteers to children in small towns and colonias throughout the Puerto Vallarta and southern Nayarit area. For more details on the Puerto Vallarta Toys for Tots program, visit the Navy League's website at VallartaNavyLeague.org.
