Galeria Vallarta, Juarez 265, will present a special exposition on Friday, Aug. 8th at 8 pm for Nacho Hernandez of Guadalajara.
 
Though the Puerto Vallarta Old Town Art Walk doesn't return until October, with over 30 art galleries and museums featuring art in all mediums, there's always something going on in this renowned International art community.

Attention Banderas Bay Area Artists! There are two contests that you may want to enter to promote your art and possibly win a great prize.

First, The Westin Resort is hosting a competition open to artists living in the Puerto Vallarta area. The theme is "Puerto Vallarta," and paintings should be figurative or realistic. The size must be 1.20 x 80 cm, and the deadline for inscription is August 1st, 2008.

To obtain an entry form, please contact Puerto Vallarta Westin Resort Public Relations Director, Maripepa Gonzalez at maripepa.gonzalez(at)westin.com or maripepa_pv(at)hotmail.com. All art works must be delivered to the Westin on September 15th and there will be a gala dinner on September 17th with results of the contest.

The winning art piece will be published on the cover of Sojourn Magazine and mentioned in articles in the Oct/Dec and Jan/Mar issues. The First Place winner will receive a vacation for 2 to either Los Cabos or Cancun, including airfare and a 4 day/3 night stay, with meals, at the Westin Resort & Spa in the destination of their choice.

The Second Place winner will receive the vacation at the destination that the First Place Winner did not choose, and the Third Place winner will enjoy a 3 day/2 night stay at the Westin Resort & Spa in Puerto Vallarta, a relax kit and a massage treatment for two

All the participants will donate their work to benefit the Asilo de Ancianos San Diego in Puerto Vallarta. Judges will be well-known personalities from the art world and executives of Starwood Resorts.

The second contest, Bienal Nacional Monterrey 2008, with three acquisition prizes of $50,000 pesos each, is being hosted by the Casa de Cultura de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey.

The Casa de Cultura de Nuevo Leon presents this contest to recognize and stimulate the development of the most recent generation of visual arts of Mexico and to enrich its artistic patrimony.

To Participate in the Contest:
Visual artists born between 1970 and 1990 in Mexico or foreigners who have lived in Mexico a minimum of three years.

The Bienal Nacional Monterrey 2008 Contest is Open to the Following Techniques:
• Painting
• Drawing
• Graphics
• Photography
• Video
• Multimedia
• Three Dimensional Work

Each artist can register for the selection process with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 works, which should be an individual or collective creation, with the option to participate in a maximum of 2 techniques.

Only works created since 2007, which do not measure more than 250 cm. in any dimension and do not weigh more than 70 kilos, can be registered. Works that have been entered in any other contest, will not accepted.

Submitted works should not be ephemeral, contain perishable components or live animals and should be subject to storage for future expositions. The pieces selected should have all the necessities for their mounting.

In case of audio or video is necessary for the presentation of the work, help can be requested from the institution organizing the event, in accord with established conditions.

The works can be registered personally or sent by express messenger, presenting a compact disc with duplicate that contains the following documents:

• A Ficha de Registratión, which is available at ArtesVisualesNuevoLeon.org, and includes information about the artist - complete name, place and date of birth, address, telephone and email address.

• A copy of artist's birth certificate and curriculum. Foreigners must include proof of residence in Mexico.

• Photographs of each piece in digital .jpg format, clearly identified with the technique, measurements, year of creation and the real value. In case of three dimensional works, include a maximum of 4 photos showing various sides of the work.

Registration is open from now until the closing on October 17, 2008, every Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm in the Coordinacion de Artes Visuales de la Casa de la Cultura De Nuevo Leon, Ave. Colon 400 oriente, Centro, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, 64000. Tel: (818) 274-3035 or (818) 374-6498.

The jury will make a first selection on the basis of the registered photos and will contact the artists by telephone or email. The selected works should be sent to the Casa de Cultura of Nuevo Leon to be received no later than November 14, 2008. Works not delivered by this date will lose their opportunity to be included in the contest.

The costs of shipping the works to and from their origin and any risk will be the participant or sponsoring institution's responsibility. Any three dimensional works should be accompanied by a Maqueta explaining the manner of installation. Works must be framed and packed with strict norms of security.

From the submitted works, the jury will select three winning pieces which will receive the acquisition prizes of $50,000 pesos each. The winners of the contest will be notified immediately, and the results will be announced in the media. The jury members are qualified members of their professions.

The selected works will be on exhibit in the Casa de la Cultura de Nuevo Leon from Nov. 27, 2008 through February 22, 2009.

Most of the Art galleries in Vallarta are open for the summer but have shorter hours as the owners prepare for the 2008-2009 Old Town Art Walk season, which begins on October 29th with the theme of Dia de los Muertos, featuring altars and artwork on this theme.

Galeria Vallarta, Juarez 265, will present a special exposition on Friday, Aug. 8th at 8 pm for Nacho Hernandez of Guadalajara. This will be Nacho's 46th individual exposition. It has been several years since he has exhibited in Puerto Vallarta and he is bringing several large, surrealist canvases in his special style, with an emphasis on women's figures. Be sure to attend this cocktail event to meet Nacho and see his new creations.
