Hola to everyone - regardless of where you are! There are still a handful of us here in Puerto Vallarta, drinking lots of liquids, sloshing through flooded streets and staying in the shade as much as possible. Now that school is back in session, it is very quiet here, which actually is quite nice. But we miss our friends who have headed north for the summer months and look forward to everyone's return!

Here are a few little tidbits of this and that...

Men's Health Check Up
Due to the popularity of this program, I am extending it through October. This check up includes: Large battery of lab work, stool study, urinalysis, Chest X-ray, Ultrasound of the prostate, bone density study, ultrasound of the abdomen and follow up with an internist. Cost: $3934 pesos for men 40 years and over. For men under 40 years, the cost is $2899 pesos, but does not include the PSA, ultrasound of prostate or bone density study.

Insurance Information
As many prepare to return for "the season" it's time to think about your insurance coverage while you are here in Vallarta. Feel free to contact me and we can check with your current coverage (at home) to see if you are covered during your stay here. And, if you are not, we are offering several great traveler's insurance policies that are widely accepted here. As well, if you are looking for full time coverage, either with Mexican National Insurance or an International Policy, we are able to assist with that as well.

Colonoscopy
I know, I know. I am always harping on people having a Colonoscopy. If you are 40 years of age or more, it is important that you have a baseline Colonoscopy and then one every five years. Our special price continues. Just do it and get it over with!

Bariatric Support Group
One of the most important things after bariatric surgery is a good support system! We have started a Bariatric Support Group, meeting monthly beginning in September. If you, or someone you know has had bariatric surgery (lapband, gastric sleeve, gastric bypass) please feel free to attend. And this is for ALL bariatric patients regardless of where their surgery was performed.

Plastic Surgery
As many of you know, I had plastic surgery on July 11 with some new boobies and a tummy tuck. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with the results and the healing process. Plastic surgery is a very personal decision, but if you are even a little interested, let me know and we can set up a consult! Prices here are approximately 40% less than in the US-Canada! I journaled my experiences in the Tribune. If you are interested in reading them (spiced with a bit of humor) let me know and I am happy to forward them!

Blood Bank
I know many of you receive my email pleas for help for blood donations. I am now working very closely with the Blood Bank to make requirements, costs, processes, etc much clearer and easier to work with. Beginning in September there will be a monthly blood drive (various locations around the bay.) I very much need some volunteers to assist with these blood drives. If you can spare a little time each month, it'd be greatly appreciated. Remember giving blood is giving life!

Some Other Fun and Interesting Tidbits:

With the blazing heat here in Vallarta, what a perfect place to escape to - San Sebastian! The Hacienda Jalisco is now under the management of my son Joe Thompson and you are guaranteed top-notch, first-rate service. See our new website at HaciendaJalisco.com Or, think of a visit this winter - imagine sitting in front of a blazing fireplace, tucked under a blanket with a good book. Heavenly! (Yes my entire family is now living full time in the tiny pueblo of San Sebastian - and they love it!)

Liana Turner of Paradise Bakery has made a few changes! First, her new location is in the Colonia Lazaro Cardenas, two blocks south of the Libramiento and 2 blocks east of Francisco Villa (behind Seapal.) Sit and enjoy a coffee and one of her delicious cinnamon rolls, cookies, sandwiches - the works! She is now also carrying homemade salad dressings (some fat-free!) which can be used for marinades or dips as well. VallartaCatering.com

As you return to Vallarta and are preparing to stock your wine cellars, remember to contact Nina Goodhope at nbgoodhope(at)yahoo.com for the best selection of vinos in town!

The annual "kick-off-the-high-season" event to raise money for the little library (Biblioteca Higuera) operated by the phenomenal Sally Conley is scheduled for November 24, 2008 so mark your calendars now! (Watch for upcoming announcements!) The basket sales last year were a huge hit and promise to be again this year. We are looking for basket donations once again so please consider putting your imaginations to the test and creating that special basket to raise funds for this very worthy cause!

Did you know that there are approximately 600 babies born each month at Regional Hospital? That is a whole lot of babies - which in turns, means a whole lot of baby layettes to be made by our group of layette-makers. We need fabric (to make blankets), receiving blankets, newborn clothes (gently used are fine!), bottles, rattles - anything to make a special layette!

New Life Mexico as always is in need of items - especially backpacks and school supplies. Just one new backpack can really help! As well, boxer shorts (new), white socks (ankle-boys), cough syrup (children's), children's vitamins are needed. For more information, visit NewLifeMexico.com.

Breakfast Club will begin in November (the first one being November 7, 2008.) Watch for the upcoming announcement as to a few changes (good ones!) as we prepare for a great event each month. I am looking for local vendors!

Salon blu continues through the summer months - stop by for a pedicure, manicure, new do - all in great air conditioning! As well, Len and I are preparing for some fun events - "Margaritas and Manicures", "Piña Coladas and Pedicures" just to give you some teasers!

If you are in the North Bay, be sure and contact Laurie Ailworth (lailworth(at)yahoo.com) as they prepare for the Nayarit Breakfast Club series to begin in September - to be held at various locations in the North Bay. Happily they have copied our Breakfast Club and it has turned out to be a great success!

And last but certainly not least, even though it seems far off, consider attending the PV Writers Group's Writer's Conference to be held February 20-22, 2009. A lot of work is going in to this event which promises to be a top-notch conference! For more information, visit puerto-vallarta-writers-group.com.
