October 29th is the date of the first Old Town Art Walk. Our folletos are printed and soon to be distributed all over town. All of the 16 participating galleries will be decorated with a theme of Day of the Dead, which is celebrated in Mexico every November 1st and 2nd, and some galleries will display altars, such as Corsica Galería.

Galería Vallarta will feature paintings by Anita Rodriguez, the artist who specializes in art showing skeletons in all sorts of whimsical poses, but with lots of symbolism. Anita shows in New Mexico and lives in Guanajuato. Also featured will be paintings on the Dia de los Muertos theme by Cristobal and others.

Corona Galería will feature "Catrinas de Onate", paintings related to el Dia de los Muertos. Art Walks will be held every Wednesday night from 6 to 10 pm through the end of May. Only on Christmas and New Year's week will we change the day to Friday.

In other PV art news, the Westin Resort hosted a gala dinner on October 2nd in honor of the 35 participating artists who donated their works for auction benefiting the San Juan Old Folks Home. Ada Colorina won first prize and her painting "Spirit of Vallarta" will appear on the cover of the Starwood Properties Magazine for Latin America. Meg Munro won second prize, and everyone enjoyed the delicious food, music and decorations. Thanks to Maripepa Gonzalez for organizing this event.

A homage to Alejandro Colunga the sculptor who, along with his brother Gabriel, created our famous "Sea Garden of Sculptures" on the Malecón was held last week to celebrate his 40 years as a leading contemporary Mexican artist. If you missed the Alejandro Colunga tribute, click HERE to watch BanderasNews' exclusive video footage of the September 29th ceremony.

José Moreno had a showing of his gorgeous tropical bird paintings this week at the new mall called Galerias Vallarta. He also shows at Galeria Vallarta and we hope to announce a show for him soon.

We hope that after the elections and an improvement in the financial news, everyone will want to take a wonderful vacation to Vallarta to relax and forget their worries. Sipping a Margarita on the beach and watching the sunset, swimming, boat trips, visits to the Botanical Gardens, shopping for unique crafts, jewelry and clothing while exploring our central historic district, dining in our fine gourmet restaurants, listening to the Mariachis and all types of live music in the various clubs and restaurants around town... that's what our city is all about.

Vallarta is a safe place to visit so don't be alarmed by the media that exaggerates every event. Puerto Vallarta is still a vacationer's paradise that has maintained its unique Old Mexico charm despite the recent growth that's gradually transforming this sleepy seaside town into a cosmopolitan city.
The driving force behind the Old Town Art Walks, Barbara Peters is the owner of Galería Vallarta, one of Puerto Vallarta's most popular art galleries. Located at Juarez 265 in downtown Puerto Vallarta, Galería Vallarta has been presenting "art in all forms" since it's founding in 1989.
