With all the new condos and homes being built in Puerto Vallarta and so many people deciding on the great lifestyle we have here, the question of decorating your new home in an artistic manner is an important consideration.

Some people are going to live here full time, others opt for part of the year or to put their unit for rental except for the time they have to vacation here. some units come furnished or offer a package deal of furnishings, even to the art works.

The package means you will have the same look as your neighbors and may be the easy way to go, but your home will lack your own touch and creativity. If you choose a package it would probably be best to be able to choose your own fabrics and purchase your wall decor apart from the package, since these groups tend to use very commercial paintings to appeal to a general market.

Puerto Vallarta is blessed with the most art galleries and decoration shops of any city on Mexico's coastlines, so finding art works and furnishings to suit your taste is fairly easy, since most everyone speaks English.

Guadalajara is also a nearby option for furnishings, but you have to consider the cost of transport and the time of delivery, plus many locations in Guadalajara do not speak as much English, and if you are trying to communicate special colors or styles, you should have good translation or communication with them.

With all the new technology available now, even in Puerto Vallarta, the latest idea is to use Giclees for part of your wall art. These are digital prints on canvas which duplicate exactly the colors of your original piece of art. You may wish to purchase an original painting that you love for your home in the U.S. or Canada, but do not want to leave it in Puerto Vallarta when you are not here, with concerns about someone stealing it or damage by our rainy season.

With the permission of the artist, you can have this painting reproduced as a Giclee for your Vallarta home. The advantage of this is that you do not need glass to cover it, you can wipe off any dust or spots with a cloth, it is not expensive and the rainy season will not damage it as it might a print on paper or a painting framed with a mat and glass. Another advantage is being able to have the art of your choice hung in a bathroom since the humidity will not harm the print on canvas.

Canvas prints or Giclees are also ideal for decoration of hotel or condo lobbies, restaurants and shops. The Marriott Hotel recently remodeled their 9 floors using this technique all done locally in Puerto Vallarta.

You do not have to worry about someone stealing a print (I really have not heard of anyone losing artwork from their homes here, because if there were to be a break- in, they would be interested in electronic equipment or something they could easily sell.) Also if you have original art that you are concerned about, there are special hanging devices available so no one can remove it from the wall without a special tool.

Galeria Vallarta is equipped to reproduce canvas prints from paintings, original photos or even posters by artists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Botero, etc., by taking a high resolution digital photo and having it printed on high quality canvas in the size you prefer. This is another advantage because the art work you like may not be the correct size for the space you want to fill, so you can have it made to your own dimensions. You can order only one print and do not have to order a quantity of prints as you would with paper reproductions.

For quotes on this process, just email Galeria Vallarta at webart(at)galeriavallarta.com or call (322) 222-0290. Other ideas for decoration that are not easily damaged are unique masks in carved wood, metal or glass, repouseé aluminimum art, ceramic wall pieces, wood carvings and unique mirrors.
The driving force behind the Old Town Art Walks, Barbara Peters is the owner of Galería Vallarta, one of Puerto Vallarta's most popular art galleries. Located at Juarez 265 in downtown Puerto Vallarta, Galería Vallarta has been presenting "art in all forms" since it's founding in 1989.
