Guillermo Gomez, A Shining Star of the Art Scene
email this pageprint this pageemail usGena Guarniere - PVNN

Galleria Dante has proudly represented Guillermo Gomez in Puerto Vallarta since 1997.
It was by accident that we met Guillermo Gomez in the mid-90’s. We were so excited to find a Mexican artist with the talent of the old master sculptors of Italy and France. After years of traveling to Italy with my family and spending the entire vacation in museums and sculpture galleries, this find surpassed all our expectations. Thus began the face lift that made Galleria Dante what is it today. In fact I own as many Gomez sculptures as my parents, and am as passionate about his sculptures as they are.

Born in Guadalajara, Guillermo often comes to the coast for inspiration. He comments, "Although I live in Guadalajara, it’s in Puerto Vallarta that I really feel alive." Many of his past sculptures have a coastal theme, such as "The Old Man and the Sea" and the "Musical Seashells."

The second of nine children in a traditional Mexican family, from a very early age he was busily recording his ideas and impressions through drawing and painting. His school years included filling notebooks with drawings and cartoons of companions and teachers.

Since his first exhibition here in 1988 he has been extremely well-received. He has completed numerous commissions for public works, four of which grace the Malecón in La Paz, Baja California. "When you are fortunate to get the attention of the public, it becomes important what you say. You have a certain responsibility. Your work becomes a testimony to that community." At 27 years old, after completing 2 degrees, he made the decision to dedicate the rest of his life to sculpture, to finding and speaking a new language though his art.

Guillermo spends years creating some of his sculptures - an idea for a sculpture begins to form, but sometimes the total picture does not conceptualize completely for two years. We can safely say that Guillermo is a perfectionist. One of the fascinating concepts of his sculptures is his amazing combination of different mediums, often combining bronze with silver, wood, metal, coins, chains, rock or gold.

Galleria Dante has proudly represented Guillermo in Puerto Vallarta since 1997. Claire and Joe are not only proud to represent such incredible works of art, but are also honored to have the privilege to work with such a honest & ethical young man and his family.

The newest works, which arrived this week, take us back to our youth when we, as early teenagers, had little or no responsibilities. He perceives these teenagers as angels playfully romping through the heavens: surfing on a comet, rollerblading on a cloud, sitting on the moon... He feels in these economic times that we all need to remember what made us smile and hold on to our dreams. Take advantage of the Anniversary sale to purchase a Guillermo Gomez.

Open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, Galleria Dante is located at Basilio Badillo #269 on the South Side of Puerto Vallarta.
