There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.

Advances in Vallarta's Beach Conservation Efforts

The fifth national operation to clean up the country's beaches was carried out last week, proving that Puerto Vallarta has done its job when it comes to the cleaning, maintenance, and certification of the city's beaches. According to SEMARNAT (Natural Resources Department) 8 national beaches are already certified and 10 more are well on their way.

Secretary of Natural Resources Rafael Elvira explained that the program monitors 40 beaches that presented health risks between 2003 and 2007. The purpose of the analysis was to assure that the media, as well as the tourists coming to Mexico's beach destinations, can enjoy the water with the security of knowing it is certified.

Vallarta Limpio

Committed to creating a better family atmosphere, Javier Bravo Carbajal gave start to a new recycling operation. This operation entitled Vallarta Limpio or “Clean Vallarta” is headed by Director of Social Development Jose Guadalupe Pelayo Martinez, who stated that during this week residents of Las Juntas will be given all the necessary information and tools to be a part of this program. During the next few months the operation will move to a different area of the city in order to provide a cleaner, healthier Vallarta for locals and tourists alike.

No Crisis in Vallarta

"Even with the cut-back of $2,700 million pesos from Jalisco's statewide budget, Puerto Vallarta is not in a crisis and we can count on our own resources." This was a statement made by Javier Bravo Carbajal who assured that there is enough money to cover city expenses until the end of the actual administration, which ends December 31st.

In a statement to the press, Carbajal made it clear that "There are over 24 counties in Jalisco that are deeply affected by the cut-back, but Puerto Vallarta is not one of them." He then commented that the counties that prepared themselves for this cut back will not be as affected as the ones who made no plans for the upcoming budget cut.
