There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.

Crucero Mexicano

The secretary of tourism in Jalisco recently celebrated the inauguration of the Crucero Mexicano, or Mexican Cruise, which had to be postponed due to the swine flu outbreak in Mexico. The income this cruise line will bring to Puerto Vallarta will greatly improve the economy by generating jobs for many people, since most of the ship's supplies will be acquired through Mexican suppliers.

Pullmantur, one of the main cruise ship companies in the world, announces its start of operations in Mexico for 2010, with the opening of a new route through the Mayan Caribbean and the re-launching of the already established route through the Mexican Pacific.

Pullmantur offers world-class service and guaranteed entertainment with its theme nights and on-board casino. Without the need of a passport or visa, Pullmantur offers easy access to the Mexican Pacific, which requires a passport or visa when reached by air or land. The Cruiser Ocean Dream will set sail for the first time on July 4, 2010.

Increase in Public Transportation Rates

"Increasing the public transportation rates would be an act of irresponsibility," says Gabriel Igartua Sanchez, president of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Department. "Due to the current economic problems it would significantly damage a lot of local’s pockets, especially those working in the hotel industry."

With that in mind, he stressed that it is very important for transportation company owners to be conscience of the current situation and not raise their rates, "Considering the type of units and the service they provide, they should think twice."

Sanchez insisted that before a rate increase can be made, transportation company owners need to invest in higher quality vehicles, and provide increased security and better service to both the locals and the port's visitors who use public transportation during their stay.

Tsunami Alert!

Over the last few weeks, alarms were placed all over Puerto Vallarta to ensure the port’s residents and visitors will be safe if a tsunami were to hit. In total, 27 alarms have been installed along Jalisco’s coast, 19 of which are located in Puerto Vallarta.

The business responsible for the installation and operation of the alarms, Federal Inc, will perform all necessary tests before the alarms are formally delivered to the corresponding authorities.

The warning sign will be activated from the state unit, located in Cihuatlán. These 2400 watt alarm units cover nearly 1 1/2 kilometers to ensure that everyone in the surrounding areas will be advised in case of emergency.

A recording will be emitted with a message in English and Spanish to make sure everyone is aware. Jalisco’s government affirms that these are just measures taken to be prepared in case disaster strikes and assures there is no current threat of a tsunami.
