Key Trends Emerge for Mexico's Home Decor Market

Resort ideas flourish as CRATE design team attends Las Vegas Market Week.
Puerto Vallarta - Celebrity decorator Steve Oratowski and Debra Stevenson of Puerto Vallarta based CRATE Interiors attended The World Market Center in Las Vegas this month, featuring over 5.1 million square feet of furniture space under one roof. The team met with leaders of the furniture industry from Ethan Allen and Donald Trump Furniture and attended presentations hosted by international manufacturers to the home décor trade. They noted several key trends emerging for Mexico’s home décor market:

Key design trends showcased at Las Vegas Market (www.lasvegasmarket.com) centered around nature, organic elements and ethnic touches reflecting a truly Global Nomad spirit. Resort Luxe design ideas like breezy slipcovers, teak furniture and the use of “tropical green” as an accent color emphasized a new style of tranquil, harmonious living. Furniture designers proposed clean, uncluttered living spaces in their showroom displays and manufacturers offered fresh new variations of bestseller styles. In an economic downtown less is always more, especially when it’s high quality and enduring.

Color palettes were nature-inspired and neutral. Most upholstery manufacturers are betting on stocking programs that include a cream or off-white fabric option with a medium brown or light grey as an alternative. Chair vendors offer high quality synthetic leather (PU split) options for the dining room and bar that wipe down easily and come in cream, white and beige. These colors are highly suitable for Mexico’s resort markets and compliment any style of interior design.

Outdoor furniture manufacturers continue to innovate with well-priced reproductions of high-end Italian designer brands. This provides a positive boost for resort homeowners that enjoy the indoor-outdoor lifestyle. The techniques used to manufacture synthetic wicker for outdoor use do not vary greatly between pricey designer brands and their high quality counterparts.

The big news is furniture styles have become more modern and timeless. Upholstery silhouettes are clean and crisp. Bedroom sets are now offered in just a few classic wood stains rather than unusual materials and colors. These sleek design trends indicate a strong direction towards longterm investment rather than frequent replacement.

From a business perspective, the supply chain of top quality brands is shrinking. Many manufacturers have been unable to survive price cuts and shrinking margins required in this economy. This means homeowners will fewer choices and a narrower selection of goods to choose from when furnishing their homes.

On-hand inventory levels are the lowest seen by CRATE’s designers in several years. This means delivery turn times will increase and it will take longer for property owners to receive their furnishings. Instead resort homeowners are encouraged plan ahead for renovation projects and high season bookings.

Finally prices are going up. In spite of the cost cuts and buying incentives observed last season, manufacturers have been unable to hold pricing down. Therefore, homebuyers must be realistic when setting interior design budgets and look for high quality goods that will last thru the lifecycle of their investment.
