Volunteering at Biblioteca Los Mangos

Biblioteca Los Mangos is located at Av. Francisco Villa 1001 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. For more information, call (322) 224-9966 or send an email to blm(at)prodigy.net.mx.
Puerto Vallarta is so lucky to have such a wonderful and very diverse library! Offering a large English section as well as the newly developed "Sally's Corner" (children's library), free movie nights, family literacy center (under development), dance and art classes, computers among many other activities, consider making part of Los Mangos one of your New Year's resolutions. You won't be sorry!

Los Mangos is a registered A.C. (non-profit association) and as with many charities in the area, is in need of your assistance. Folks are needed for handling some of the library duties - anything from shelving books to providing a program for the children. Spanish is not necessary (but of course, helpful for some of the activities.)

On January 9, 2010 at 10 am Deborah Wintrob (tireless and star volunteer at Los Mangos) will be presenting a Volunteer Training Program for the library. Please consider attending this special event (ends at 12:30 pm) to give something back to our community. A few highlights:

• Brief history of libraries in Mexico

• General guidelines on how to work with children

• How to encourage literacy skills

• How to set up an arts and craft lesson or activity plan for volunteers with no background in working with children.

• Brief review of resources that can be used to enhance Sally's Corner activities

• How to use the instructions in the volunteer manual to shelve books and assist the library staff.

The main goal is to provide an enjoyable learning experience and to have a good comfort level. A commitment of 1 to 2 hours per month up to weekly hours is needed. Perhaps you would just like to do one program for Sally's Corner - no problem!

I have chosen Los Mangos as one of my major commitments for 2010. Your assistance is very much needed including ideas for programs, fundraisers, classes - any and everything! Get to know your local library and give back to the community at the same time.

Biblioteca Los Mangos is located at Av. Francisco Villa 1001, Col Versalles, Puerto Vallarta. For more information, call (322) 224-9966 or send an email to blm(at)prodigy.net.mx. For updated information on Los Mangos and library activities, please visit biblioteca-los-mangos.blogspot.com.
