There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.

Breathalyzer Test Program Officially Begins

This past weekend local authorities initiated the breathalyzer program on drivers that are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. This comes at a time when Puerto Vallarta will be inundated with Spring Breakers and Semana Santa visitors.

Gustavo Ulloa, Sub Director of the Transit Police said that this will be a permanent procedure and not only present during busy holidays or during events. President Salvador González Reséndiz has expressed that it is time that Puerto Vallarta changes its image as a "Lawless Town."

In the past, the authorities have been very tolerant with tourists, allowing them to drink in public places and even turning a blind eye to drinking and driving. All this will be changing as the new administration will be less tolerant and applying the law when necessary.

"Our intention is to avoid accidents and create a safe environment for the families and visitors of Puerto Vallarta. Those who are drinking in public places will be asked to take it home or back to their hotels. Those caught driving under the influence will be detained and their vehicle will be towed."

New Water Plant for Mismaloya

Mismaloya, famous for putting Puerto Vallarta on the map with the film Night of The Iguana is still not connected to a proper drainage system. However, on March 17th, the governor of Jalisco, Emilio González Márquez inaugurated the new water plant developed by Seapal.

The cost of this new system is $15.7 million pesos and is situated on 1719 square metres of land. The pipes for this new system were tunnelled to each resident's home, which is approximately 60 houses. However, the drainage system within the houses will be left up to the owners to construct and connect to the outer pipes.

The 17th of March also falls during the week of "World Water Day 2010." Seapal is dedicated to promoting the importance of clean water to children and adults alike with their slogan being "Clean Water for a Healthy World."

On Friday, March 19th, the water company will be hosting a water expo and ceremony at Los Arcos Amphitheatre. Earlier that same day at 10:30 am a children's ballet, "Vallarta Azteca" will perform. On Sunday, March 21st, they will hold their annual 10k run beginning at the stadium where there will be 100 thousand pesos worth of prizes. This event commences at 8:30 am.
