Nearly 100 gathered May 22nd and declared their support of SETAC, Vallarta's 'GLBT community center at Trattoria Michel, in Vallarta's beautiful Zona Romantica. Those in attendance shared a meal, heard about the Community Center's achievements, and the needs that SETAC was created to address.

SETAC opened the GLBT Community Center to provide gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people residing in Vallarta, physical and mental health services, along with human and professional development services meant to enrich and strengthen lives. SETAC is committed to the GLBT Community participating in society as full, pro active and positive members.

Adriana Garcia, President of SETAC, spoke of the vulnerability the members of the GLBT community in Mexico find themselves in. She went on to speak of the specific problems that GLBT people in Vallarta have to face and how SETAC is working to help members of the community.

She introduced members of the Board of Directors, the executive director, the operations personnel, the Advisory Board, instructors, the volunteers and, of course, the founder. In the absence of Ed Thomas, Daniel Gomez, member of the Advisory Board, thanked the guests for their attendance and spoke of his own confidence in the important mission of SETAC.

Francisco Arjona, Executive Director, told the audience about the activities and services available at the Community Center. He himself arrived in Vallarta from a small pueblo on the outskirts' of Guadalajara with no one to talk to or anywhere to go to find people like himself.

Living in fear and constantly worrying that people would "find out" about his sexual orientation, Paco escaped his small town for Puerto Vallarta, where he knew he would find acceptance and other people like himself. For this reason, he is extremely happy and grateful for the existence of SETAC and is glad to awaken every day knowing he will go to work and help others live without fear of discrimination.

SETAC gave special thanks to Gary Green for donating a raffle prize for a stay in the luxurious Andales on the Bay Penthouse, along with a gift certificate of $500 pesos for dinner at Trattoria Michel. Thanks were also extended to Miguel Escontria for providing music for the event, new friend, Marc Serrao from Applegate Realtors who asked attendees to reach deeper into their pockets and contribute money in support of SETAC. The Advisory Board (Roger Dubois, Eric Wichner, Daniel Gomez, Mike Sole, Jeff Davis and Alfred Ricci) received acknowledgement for making this night possible.

If you would like more information about the SETAC GLBT Community Center, the services it offers and the ways you can help, please call (322) 224-1974, email contacto(at)setac.com.mx or visit SETAC.com.mx.
