Parque Cardenas: Who Let This Happen?

This photo, which was taken shortly after Parque Lazaro Cardenas was inaugurated in July 2006, clearly shows that the park has seen better days. (photo by PromoVision)
Have you been passed by Parque Lazaro Cardenas on the south side of Puerto Vallarta lately? That is if you can call it a park! What could be and should be a lovely park over flowing with bougainvilleas, large trees and greenery of every description, is now a dead zone.

Some time back many of us were protesting the removal of the park that was there, to build a parking garage. And though it was in need of care, it was at least green.

But we were assured that the plaza that was to replace the park would be better, attract more people to sit under the trees and admire the flowers while watching entertainment on Friday evenings.

And it did, for a very short time. Then for whatever reason, the park was forgotten, and no one even came to water! (Whose responsibility was/is it? The people who own the garage or the city?) And so at least 75% of the plants that are there are dead - and will not come back.

I am wondering why no one noticed this before it was too late. All it needed was water and a little care. We all know how profusely everything grows here with little care, but plants DO NEED WATER! The park has an irrigation system, but it HAS TO BE TURNED ON!

Are we going to have to rename the park? Not only do we live on Muertos Beach, but now we have the Muertos Park!
