My husband Jay just drove to Sayulita from Nuevo Vallarta, and here is an update on the damage. Route 200 is open all the way north. However, Nayarit is still asking for emergency travel only between Bucerías and Lo de Marco (30 miles north of here) - they're asking for people to stay off roads if possible above Bucerías and below Rincon de Guayabitos.

FYI, yes, the roads are fine north to La Cruz. There are numerous stops for road repair starting just past Bucerías through to Sayulita (and beyond, but he didn't go farther).

The road from Punta Mita to Sayulita is closed - period. The government is doing an immense, and seems to be a good, job of trying to clear the highway of landslides and manage the collapsed roads. The bridge to Sayulita has collapsed, there is only a single board as a footbridge.

Sayulita has been very hard hit by the flooding, including the main river there - they have no services. No water, sewer, electricity. Nayarit is handing out flyers advising caution against cholera, conjuntivitis (eye infection/inflammation), and general hygiene concerns. While Jay was there, people were taking buckets to the river for water.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, Jay took the photos above. The red cones on this portion of Highway 200 used to be the center line on the road. The dirt areas used to have trees before the mudslides. Mud flooded into some homes up to waist high.

The beach baños built by the river in Sayulita are now IN the river. Some cars are still stuck in mud. With bridges collapsed entering both Sayulita and San Pancho, getting supplies into town will be difficult since only small footbridges are in place.

For this reason, local non-profit PEACE is collecting donations for ALL of the affected villages in the Banderas Bay region. Collection centers have been established at Calle de Belice #1468 in Puerto Vallarta and at Hotel Quinta Del Sol, Hidalgo 162 PTE in Punta de Mita. Lori Wilson is also collecting donations at Coral #8, esquina Huachinango in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

If you would like to donate please do so by September 19th. Items collected will be delivered to the towns of San Pancho, Sayulita, San Ignacio, Guamuchil and Higuera Blanca by panga.
