Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Many properties in the Bay of Banderas area offer magnificent gardens where you can putter or have someone else get their hands muddy. Timothy Real Estate Group Broker Jay Burchell shows us some of the tropical flowering plants that are perfect for your Puerto Vallarta home.

"One of the great things about living in the tropics is that anybody can be a gardner," says Jay Burchell, Gardener and Real Estate Broker, "There's such a large variety of plants to choose from and they are all super easy to grow in the Puerto Vallarta, Mexico area."

He goes on to say, "Probably one of the most recognizable plants in the area is the bougainvillea and it's branchy, bushy, and it has lots of thorns and I just stuck myself."

"A few things to know about bougainvillea is that it is drought tolerant so it does really well during dry season, it also does really well during the tropical rains," says Jay, "The more root bound the bougainvillea is the more blooms you will get from it. About the blooms, most people think the colorful parts are the flower but really the colored parts are called the brackets and they surround the flower, which is delicate and very light in color, almost white."

Jay has also found out that they are a bit of maintenance. "One more thing you should know about the bougainvillea, is that they lose their leaves a lot so you get a beautiful carpet all over the ground. So be prepared to get your broom out," he adds.

There is another great tropical, flowering bush perfect for every home. "Ixora is another hearty plant, almost indestructible and also known as the jungle flame, says Jay."

"Ixora does really well in the sunlight and it is really low maintenance. It thrives well in the tropical rains and you can go two to three weeks without watering during the dry season. It is mostly used as a hedge or screen plant because it can grow up to four or five meters tall. This plant also does well in pots and can be pruned for a more formal look."

Many properties in the Bay of Banderas area offer magnificent gardens where you can putter or have someone else get their hands muddy.

Rio Amapas is a perfect example of indoor/outdoor eco-living, large, contemporary, beautiful homes, surrounded by lush, landscaped jungle gardens, and all that with a river running through it.
