Re: Hubert Vicars

Dear Polly,

On July 25, 2011, Department 14 of the Alameda Superior Court was adjourned in loving memory of Hubert Vicars. Hubert was a loving husband, friend and father figure to many and his passing has left us with a profound sense of loss. His moral compass was always headed in the right direction and he lived his life with a sense of kindness, compassion and decency matched by few others. He preached his values by his actions rather than his words. He was never too busy to listen and when he offered his advice it was always done in a non-judgmental way. His overwhelming goodness allowed those of us who loved him to forgive him for his penchant for corny jokes and bad spoonerisms.

Hubert was also a magician extraordinaire. He performed for former presidents and actresses as well as we mere mortals. Most of his tricks were easy to decipher but Hubert saved his greatest trick for last. When he died more than a dozen people immediately felt that they had lost their best friend in life. That was the true magic of Hubert. I cannot figure that trick out, and may never be able to, but I will forever carry the memory of Hubert in my heart and I will spend the rest of my days trying to duplicate his feat.

A formal proclamation of the court should probably not include the word love but no other word seems adequate. On behalf of all who knew Hubert I send my condolences and thank you for the way that you so willingly shared him with us all.

With all of the love and gratitude in the world,
Thomas A. Rasch
