May 22, 2012

Highlights of the social scene included a dinner party at the home of local hoteliers Paul Christ and Luis Tello, and a dinner at No Way José! hosted by owner and Democrats Abroad member, Julie Guerrero.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The conference held at the Fiesta Americana Hotel May 17-20 was "...a resounding success on all levels... and a significant economic contributor to Vallarta..." according to PV residents Dee Dee Camhi, Democrats Abroad Chair for Mexico, and Bonnie Mott the Chair of the Costa Banderas Chapter that hosted the event.

Over sixty (60) delegates representing the leadership of the various regions of Democrats Abroad - the Americas, Europe/Africa and Austral/Asia - were present for the four days of meetings and another 40 plus participated via online conferencing. "Home" countries for on-site conferees included many disparate locales such as South Africa, Hong Kong, Thailand, Guatemala, Canada, Israel, Norway and nearly all the countries of Europe.

Calling the 2012 Presidential Election 'one of the most important in the history of the United States,' participants devoted long days, stretching from early morning until late evening, to the review of resolutions on Gun Control, Immigration, Medicare availability in Mexico and more. Additionally, delegates to the national Democratic Convention were selected and a wide variety of Seminars held. Democrats' being the individualists they are, the debate was often spirited.

Yet time was saved for fun, and attendees devoted themselves to sightseeing, souvenir shopping and social gatherings with the same enthusiasm seen in the formal meetings.

Highlights of the social scene included a dinner party for about 100 at the home of local hoteliers (Hotel Mercurio) Paul Christ and Luis Tello, and a dinner at No Way José! hosted by owner and Democrats Abroad member, Julie Guerrero.

Wrapping up the conference on the afternoon of May 20th, delegates were frequently heard praising the city of Puerto Vallarta and Vallartenses in general. Many indicated an intent to return to their homes in disparate parts of the world and pen letters to the editors of local papers indicating they found Vallarta beautiful, inviting, a great value and safe.
