Prepare Your Puerto Vallarta Home for September's Rains

September 5, 2012

September may be the height of rainy season here in Puerto Vallarta, but with just a few precautions you can sit back and watch mother nature's fireworks, worry free. (Photo: Josef Kandoll)

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - September is the tail end of summer, but it is also the height of rainy season in Puerto Vallarta. Most locals like to refer to it as 'the wet season' for a variety of reasons. There's an average of about 15 inches/37cm of rain for the month.

"I love it," says Rhonda Rohatynchuk, real estate agent with Ron Morgan Properties in Puerto Vallarta and Bucerias, "The sky lights up every evening as lighting dances its way across the sky. The gods of thunder make their presence known, booming out in a loud voice and capturing the attention of everyone." She gives us the poetic version.

If you are not prepared for this time of year, you poems may be a bit more harsh... in spite of nature's beauty. There are very few homes in the Banderas Bay region that do not require any kind of preparations for September's monsoon-like weather, so here are a few 'Rainy Day' tips:

• Seal any gaps around doors and window frames. It depends on which way the wind is blowing, but keep towels handy because the rain and wind can be fierce and you don't want water running through your house. It usually takes the first rains to figure out where there is an issue.

• Make sure to clear all drains. Clogs caused by leaves and debris can create a huge backup and you don't want to have to dash out during a storm to unplug the blockage. Don't forget to check the drains on your balcony and terrace.

• Carpets or throw rugs need to be aired out continually during the season to keep them from growing mold. Consider options such as bamboo mats or moisture resistant acrylic carpets. Also, get entry rugs for your doorstep to ensure mud and sand are not carried into the house.

• Most houses are made of cement and any small crack can turn into a major leak. Patch up or reinforce a surface and seal the house inside and out, then paint for extra protection. Don't forget the roof. The sealer you'll need is called impermeabilizante.

• Since there are a lot of thunderstorms at this time of year, it's a good idea to unplug any electrical device you don't want fried. All the surge protectors and voltage regulators are great, but won't stop the damage caused by a lightning strike.

"The streets are dust free and the air is fresh," says Rhonda, "and my husband also loves this daily ritual because his car gets washed for free. Long live the rainy season!"

With just a few precautions you can sit back, relax, and watch mother nature's fireworks... worry free.
