Savory Saturdays at the Old Town Farmers' Market

March 15, 2013

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - If you are looking for something that will tantalize your taste buds, then head over to the Old Town Farmers' Market. You'll find all sorts of edible delights as well as two favorites that keep tourists and locals coming back for more: House of Indian Curry's cuisine and Zumo-Fresh's 100% natural fruit juices.

A fan of international cuisine, Shohreh Polley brings her classic Indian dishes to the Market every Saturday. From butter chicken to beef or fish curry, her House of Indian Curry offers an exceptional blend of flavors and spices. For those who prefer a vegetarian option, Shohreh cooks up a scrumptious vegetable curry with rice and cucumber yogurt.

For over a year, Shohreh has been running a successful takeout and delivery business here in Puerto Vallarta. Not only does she cook up a variety of Indian plates, but she hand selects the ingredients and uses a multi-level preparation process. Of course, Shohreh is quick to add that the magic is in her creative blend of spices.

But what makes Shohreh's story so unique is that she is not Indian.

"People are normally surprised that an Iranian sells tasty Indian food," says Shohreh. "When I was young and attending university in Cyprus, I used to have Indian, Pakistani and Lebanese roommates. I loved the smell of their Indian spices and more so, loved the taste."

Because of this passion for Indian cuisine, Shohreh now treats her new and returning customers to an unforgettable dining experience. When asked what brings her back to the Market each week, Shohreh simply smiles and says, "All of my customers go home happy."

If you would like to try some of Shohreh's House of Indian Curry dishes this Saturday, stop by the International Food Court in Nacho Daddy's on Basilio Badillo. For takeout or delivery options, contact indianfoodpv(at)gmail.com.

After finishing your favorite House of Indian Curry dish, be sure to stop by Zumo-Fresh for an amazing selection of 100% natural juices. Lime, orange, grapefruit, tangerine and the ever-popular Michelada Mix are sure to please on a tropical day in paradise.

"We buy the fruit, disinfect it, and bottle the juice ourselves," says Carlos Garcia Vazquez, Puerto Vallarta native and owner of Zumo-Fresh. "It's free from sugar and preservatives and is the perfect refreshment on-the-go."

Zumo-Fresh started selling its 100% natural fruit juices to local restaurants and clubs. But customers couldn't get enough of the high-quality taste, so they started selling directly to tourists and locals. Today, Zumo-Fresh is in its third season at the Old Town Farmers Market.

"Because we're here every Saturday," says Carlos, "we reach a whole new community of people buying juice to serve at home. We have customers from all over the world, and they visit with us every year. We've made good friends in the community all because we offer a great product."

If you'd like to fill up on Zumo-Fresh's 100% natural juices, be sure to stop by their Market location across from Fajita Republic on Basilio Badillo.

Don't miss the tasty goodness at the Old Town Farmers' Market. Located along Basilio Badillo between Olas Altas and Ignacio Vallarta, this "make it, bake it, grow it" Market is open from 9:30 am to 2 pm from the first Saturday in November to the last Saturday in May.
