Finding Your Own Imagery in Art with Sheila Seguin

February 18, 2014

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Sheila Seguin will begin teaching at Art Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta on Wednesday nights, starting February 19th 4:30-7:00 pm. Sheila is currently co-curating the new exhibit at ART VallARTa, which opened on Friday, February 14th and runs through March 1st. The producer of Art Vallarta is Nathalie Herling.

Not only is Sheila a visual artist, but a wonderful teacher. I had not done much in the visual world, my field being performing, writing and acting in theatre (Love and Insanity at Boutique Theatre 2013) and felt immediately safe and welcomed by Sheila. I arrived and she had all the tools and color mediums at the ready for each student's use: watercolor, oil, inks, etc. One can explore color, texture, shape, line and discover exercises to deal with the negative voices inside one's head. The students just have to show up.

Sheila's own work is provocative, thoroughly creative and expressive. She is inspiring as she is unafraid to reveal herself in any medium and on any subject. Her background has feet in New York City and Berkley where she has exhibited in many galleries as well as appearing as one of six artists on a PBS series exhibiting and explaining her art.

With a flowing structure, Sheila has the gift to be there when you need technique, direction or encouragement and to give a student space when he or she wants it. This teacher is not about pretty pictures, she's about using visual medium to discover and explore your own imagery.

There are no mistakes, there's just letting go and learning how to control what you create visually. I left Sheila's classes energized and ready to come back. Now she's teaching at Art Vallarta which is a new complex of workshops, classes exhibits and artists' studios which should be even more stimulating.

After studying several bodies of work in the theatre for ten years at a time, I know a good teacher when I experience one. For Sheila's bio and details on her classes, email artistsheila(at)hotmail.com, or call (322) 222-3397.

ART VallARTa is a collaborative art space located at Pilitas #213 just off Olas Altas in the heart of Puerto Vallarta's Romantic Zone. For more information, visit artvallarta.com
