Drag Derby to Benefit Pulpito Plaza Project on May 22

May 15, 2014

To register as a contestant, stop by Garbo's Piano Bar or The Swedes Restaurant or email thepalmpv@gmail.com. More information is also available on Facebook at 'Pulpito Drag Derby.'

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - More than a dozen contestants are already preparing their costumes and high heels for the first ever 'Pulpito Drag Derby' to be held May 22 starting at 6 pm at the new Pulpito Plaza (Pulpito and Olas Altas) in the vibrant Southside neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Pulpito Plaza Project, which aims to add benches and plants to the already rehabbed Pulpito stairs and improving the adjacent corners and sidewalks along the street.

Derby contestants will dress in 'drag' costumes and wear a high heel shoe of at least 12 cm while competing. Participants will begin at the Pulpito Plaza stairs with trays of rainbow colored glasses and proceed along Pulpito street and back to Olas Altas to participating local businesses which include The Swedes, Coco's Kitchen, Nu, Pulpito 116, Maya, Sama, Ron Morgan Realtors, R Salon, and The Palm Cabaret. At each stop, contestants will pick up extra drinks and face other challenges (and free shots of tequila or other treats from each business).

Watching will be just as much fun! Spectators will be able to place bets on the top three contestants. Winners of the 'bet' will receive their pay out at 3x1 in Pulpito Derby Dollars good at participating businesses. If your contestant wins and you had placed a $200 peso bet, your pay out would be $600 pesos in Pulpito Derby Dollars!

Judges will be positioned along the route, and cash prizes for the top three competitors will be $5000, $1500 and $1000 pesos respectively (generously donated by participating businesses). Celebrity judges for the event include Ms. Beverly Fairfax, Julie Guerrero of No Way Jose! Restaurant, Christian Serrano of Vallarta Bar Hopping Tours, Michael Basille and Tim Longpré of PVRPV.

Results of the contest will be revealed during a special show at The Palm on the same night starting at 9 pm, hosted by the sensational Supermana (singing live!) from Mexico City with special guest 'Drag Kings' from Seattle, Washington. 100% of the door proceeds will be donated to the Pulpito Plaza Project.

Contestants and judges will meet for a rehearsal and informational meeting from 6 to 7 pm at The Palm (Olas Altas 508) on May 20, 2014.

To register as a contestant, stop by Garbo's Piano Bar or The Swedes Restaurant or email thepalmpv@gmail.com. More information is also available on Facebook at 'Pulpito Drag Derby.' See you at the Derby!
