Ángeles en Libertad 'Bottlecaps for Life' Campaign

May 6, 2014

On Saturday, May 17th, Ángeles en Libertad will be hosting the Destapate y Dona Vida event, featuring live entertainment at Los Arcos del Malecón in downtown Puerto Vallarta from 12 noon to 11 pm.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The Ángeles en Libertad civil association invites everyone to participate in this year's bottle cap collection campaign. The plastic bottlecaps will be sold to a recycler to generate funds to support poor people with life threatening illnesses.

Over the last two years the 'Destapate Contra el Cancer' (bottlecaps against cancer) campaign has collected a total of nine tons of bottlecaps, which were donated to the "Fray Antonio Alcalde" Civil Hospital in Guadalajara to provide cancer studies, treatments and chemotherapies to 19 jalisciense adults who have cancer, but limited economic resources.

This year, Ángeles en Libertad set their sights on helping children in Puerto Vallarta and the greater Banderas Bay area, whose parents have neither the support of seguros social (social security insurance, or IMSS) nor the financial resources to cover medical expenses.

They launched a call through the social networks, asking local companies and society in general to help them find a child with cancer that met the above mentioned criteria.

After visits to the homes of children who were reported, and interviewing their parents to learn each child's status, 12-year-old Colonia Brisas del Pacifico resident, José Javier García Vera, who has high blood pressure, spastic quadriparesis, and Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, as the child to be supported by the proceeds from this year's bottle cap collection and recycling campaign, Destapate y Dona Vida.

On Saturday, May 17th, Ángeles en Libertad will be hosting the Destapate y Dona Vida event at Los Arcos del Malecón in downtown Puerto Vallarta from 12 noon to 11 pm. They are organizing a program that includes local musicians, singers, clowns, dance and variety shows, and lots of other surprises, with the intention that the people passing by can contribute bottle caps or resources to this cause.

The event is supported by generous sponsors who have donated items, such as lighting, audio and video equipment, awnings, tables and chairs, t-shirts, posters and brochures, food and bottled water, and, most importantly, the volunteers and performers who are unselfishly giving their time and efforts to stand up for love and community service.

Proceeds from the recycling of the bottlecaps collected at this event will pay for the special solution used to feed José Javier and the hygienic apparatus that dispenses it, which must be replaced every year. His father, Mr. Domingo Garcia, works in construction and has only IMSS insurance, which does not provide the drugs and treatments that José Javier needs.

Ángeles en Libertad is working hard to make this first stage of the Destapate y Dona Vida campaign equally or more successful than previous bottle cap drives, and hopes that together we can collect 5 tons of all kinds, colors and sizes of bottle caps for recycling.

How Can You Be Part Of This Noble Cause?

Since Ángeles en Libertad does not handle money, they approach institutions, companies and businesses like yours to be part of the sponsors who make it possible to fulfill their goal of helping those most in need.

Several things are still needed to make the Saturday, May 17th event a success:

• 500 posters and 1000 brochures
• One 4.00 x 6.00mts Campaign Banner (to be hung on the arches)
• Bottled Water
• Campaign T-Shirts to generate resources at the event to cover all campaign costs.
• 50 T-Shirts for Angels supporters and volunteers (your logo on the sleeve or the back)
• Food and drink for the 50 volunteers performing artists
• Angels support; If you want to send your staff to work with us during the event and help us to receive, weigh, and separate the bottle caps and taparoscas for the final count, they can wear your company T-shirts (for publicity). An event badge will be issued to each volunteer.

We would love to see your logo as a sponsor on the screens to be installed at the event!
